“Happiness is a butterfly, which when pursued, is always just beyond your grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you”. - Nathaniel Hawthorne
This quote reminds me of a former girlfriend of a young man I know. This young lady could never sit still. She was always chasing the next dream, the next job, the next “thing” she wanted. She had Neiman Marcus taste but a Dollar Store budget. She’d get her dream job and quit within a week or two. This cycle was repeated a few times while they were dating.
The young man she was dating is as steady as a rock, chill, never too high or too low. Pursued his favorite job, got it and has stuck with it and excelled. Then out of the blue, this young lady decided she was moving on, broke up with him for no apparent reason.
The young man was hurt, but soon realized it was for the best, i.e. she was high maintenance. Later he met another young lady who is a beautiful soul, hardworking, talented, and recognized what a prize this young man was to have as a boyfriend. It wasn’t much longer when this couple got married and is now enjoying a great life together.
I feel bad for the butterfly chaser, she had it all, but couldn’t focus on the amazing butterfly she had right in front of her if she only sat down and stayed still instead of chasing another. She could have captured a great husband and a fulfilling life.
Don’t get me wrong, chasing dreams is a good thing, but sometimes we need to realize what we have is exactly what we NEED.
My prayer for you all is to have the wisdom to know when to chase and when to sit down and let the butterfly rest on you.
