People may hear your words, but they feel your attitude. - John C. Maxwell

There have been times where I’ve gotten into discussions on topics that have turned combative, not in the exact words said, but in the body language and tone/attitude of the one I was talking with.

Even the best of friends can have disagreements and those can be healthy discussions if conducted properly. Having a calm tone/attitude and even posture can go a long way to signal that you are not being condescending or attempting to force your point of view, but sharing your beliefs without judgement.

I was on the receiving end of a very disturbing attitude, one I never had before with a longtime friend. I must have hit a nerve that set my friend off on a tirade that made me believe I had lost a friend.

A couple weeks later I received a very nice text apologizing for the behavior and a request to meet to talk in person about it. I’m hopeful we can reconcile. I suspect something else was going on that prompted the behavior I witnessed.

You just never know what others are going through that can instigate very negative attitudes and behaviors.

This taught me a valuable lesson that HOW you talk to someone can be more impactful than the WORDS you say to them, i.e., actions carry a lot more weight than words.

Be careful how you speak my friends.
