“Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.” – Andy Dufresne

The Shawshank Redemption movie is in my top two of all time. Anytime I’m scrolling through YouTube channels, and it is playing, I stop and watch it until the end. I’ve often quoted this line to my Grief clients because when you are processing a loss, just like Andy had to crawl through 300 yards of sewer filth, so do my clients have to crawl through the pain of a loss before they are free and enjoying the rain washing them clean and they recover their sense of hope again.

This movie also reminds me of Joseph from the Scriptures. He was a favorite child and thus hated by his brothers. His brothers attempted to kill him, but then decided to let him be sold into slavery to an Egyptian pharaoh. He suffered greatly, thrown into jail being falsely accused of attacking the pharaoh’s wife and forgotten by inmates he helped. Then, only to rise to power, second only to the pharaoh and eventually saving his family from starvation. He kept his hope and faith even when things felt hopeless.

Genesis 50:20-21…

But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? 20 You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. 21 So then, don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your children.” And he reassured them and spoke kindly to them.

Sometimes we are in hopeless situations only to realize if we have faith, we are not alone, but about to receive a lesson and/or a blessing from our Creator we never imagined.

My prayer for you is to stay hopeful, even in times of hopelessness that we may all face in our life’s journey.
