“Friends are the family we choose.” —Jennifer Aniston

I can count on one hand the number of true friends in my life. My best friend is one I met in 3rd grade; we still talk about once a week or so. The others are two guys I met in my church back in the late 1990’s; we ended up working together in the same company. And the last two, one is an OB I met who is much younger than me and the other was one I hung out with in high school. Unfortunately they all live in different cities across the country; I rarely get to see them in person. At my age, it seems harder to meet new friends that aren’t just acquaintances, with one exception, Allen/Dippy Dawg was willing to share his struggles with me and in a very short time we became friends but unfortunately that time was cut too short.

Maybe it’s a guy thing, as you can probably tell by my TG posts I’m not afraid to open up about my life, but I suspect most guys my age (almost 62) don’t really want to open up much and thus it is hard to form solid relationships. My wife on the other hand, she’s made two best friends in less than a year where we vacation. I guess women are more willing to share with each other about their lives.

Friends can be the family we choose, especially if our birth family has disappointed us. Some of the roughest times in my life were navigated with the help of my close friends.

If you happen to be separated from your best friends or haven’t established new ones that are nearby, I encourage you to take a risk and make new ones. We were created to be in community with one another. This TG thread is a testimony of how we can lift each other up and hold each other accountable if we are getting out of line. Good friends will do that for you.

May you be blessed with many friends.
