“You are genuinely happy if you don’t know why.” —Joseph Mayer

Okay, this quote above really made me think to understand what he might be saying. At first, I thought how can you not know WHY you are happy. I’m curious what y’all think this quote means.

I did a poll here on OB asking, what makes you happy; I received many responses that cover several topics. But, if you think about what those included, most, if not all, were focused on circumstances, many of which may not be in our control.

I know people who seem to have it all, wealth, good health, a great spouse, friends, a good job, and yet they are miserable. It doesn’t make sense, does it? On the other side of this coin, I know people who have had a really hard life, yet they are “happy”.

Perhaps it does make sense if you are a person of faith. Our Creator says we are made in His image and with that stamp on us, it makes sense that He wants a relationship with us and when we don’t have that relationship then joy and happiness will evade us even in the best of circumstances.

We will all face trials in our lives and those hard times can possibly negatively impact our “happiness”, but it doesn’t have to be this way according to our Creator, below are some references of how we can keep our happiness close at hand.

May you have a joyful weekend.

Psalm 16:11, Philippians 4:11-13, Hebrews 13:5, John 15:9-14
