“Now I look at the years gone by and wonder at the powers that be, I don't know why fortune smiles on some and lets the rest go free?” The Eagles/Sad Cafe

A long time ago, my wife and I were at dinner with our neighbors, and we got on the topic of how fortunate we all have been in our lives up to that point in time. Don’t get me wrong, both couples have had their share of hard times and trials, but we had a moment of incredible gratitude.

I quoted the above lyrics from the Long Run Eagles album to our friends, and it got us all to wonder why some are so blessed and others not.

I wish I had an answer that would satisfy everyone. There is no denying that there is so much pain and suffering in this world. People of faith will say it is because we live in a sinful world and it’s a result of not all human beings having the ability to be selfless, to love rather than hate, to genuinely being happy for others good fortune instead of jealous or envious.

I believe our Creator allows good and bad fortune to fall on the righteous and unrighteous.

What should our response be to this? Perhaps loving our neighbors as ourselves is a great start to turn the tide of suffering.

Blessings to you all!
