“Measured against eternity, our time on earth is just a blink of an eye, but the consequences of it will last forever.” – Rick Warren

Have you ever wondered why you were born into the time period you live in? Maybe you’ve thought about what it would have been like to live in a different century. Growing up I used to listen to my Mom’s classical music, she was a piano teacher and my Dad loved Frank Sinatra and the Big Band sound of the 40’s. I enjoy that type of music as well as my rock n’ roll of the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s. I think I would have enjoyed living in the 1940’s and 50’s.

But…I was born in the 1960’s, a time of a lot of turmoil, riots, war, incredible music released by bands like The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Steely Dan, etc. Born in a small town in New Jersey (Get a rope!) we eventually moved around to Connecticut and then to Toledo, Ohio where I finished high school before moving to Austin to attend The University of Texas.

After graduating, I met my wife, who grew up in a small town in Mexico. She came to Austin to learn English with plans of moving to Europe to meet her “Viking husband” while managing a resort hotel. After meeting me, those plans were dashed. I’ve often thought, what are the odds that I would meet a lady from Mexico to marry when the thought of it had never crossed my mind?

My answer/conclusion is that it was meant to be. I dated more than 14 different ladies; all but one dumped me for various reasons. As I look back after being married for over 37 years, so many events transpired that wouldn’t have happened had I married one of the other 14 ladies I dated. For example, I would have never met my future business partner (my wife met his wife at church); never attended my first church where my wife and I moved to in East Texas and found our faith, and thus my whole life would have been very different.

I’ve come to realize that all of us have a purpose, planted in the place and time determined long ago to have our particular sphere of influence. The challenge is for us to figure out what that purpose is for our lives.

My prayer for you all today is for you to find that purpose and get busy fulfilling it.
