“If your ship doesn’t come in, swim out to it!” —Jonathan Winters

One of my favorite memories when I was young was watching a movie with my parents called “It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.” He was one of my favorite comedians. In this movie his character was racing several others that stopped to help a dying man at a car crash scene that told them that a ton of money was buried under a big W.

Another motorist who wasn’t at the crash scene saw Jonathan’s character struggling on a bike and tricked him into telling him about the buried money, then left him stranded on the road only to catch up to him when the trickster got car trouble.

Without telling you the details of the ending, I’ll just say all of the motorists ended up getting into a lot of trouble. They were racing to collect all of the money. Instead of working together, they tried to get the money all for themselves until forced to work as a group.

These were ordinary people who became extraordinary selfish when presented with a “ship” that they thought had come in that would be easy money.

The reality for most of us is our ship is not something you wait for; you need to go get it in the right way, not by trying to climb over others to reach it.

I’ve witnessed competitors in my former industry attempt to have their ship come in by dealing in treachery only to end up in a lot of trouble. One competitor was so devious; he ended up divorced and lost half of his ill-gotten gain to his ex-wife whom he cheated on with an employee.

Don’t lose your eternal reward for a short term gain.
