“Sharks don’t sink” – Jasmin Graham

Great White Swimming GIF by Shark Week

I rarely get in the ocean water, probably due to seeing the movie Jaws. We are told that shark bites are rare, but I don’t want to tempt fate by swimming out into the ocean. I suspect most of us are afraid of sharks, but they are a vital piece of the ocean eco system. They help remove the weak and sick marine life as well as keep a balance with competitors helping to ensure species diversity.

I was watching a news story about the author quoted above who is one of a minority of black women who study sharks. She wrote a book with the quoted title. According to her studies, sharks have negative buoyancy meaning they don’t float. The title of Jasmin Graham’s book is a bit misleading. Sharks will sink, but they don’t because…they are always moving forward.

As humans we can also sink if we get stagnant/stationary/stuck in our own problems and challenges that at times can overwhelm us that can lead to paralysis. I can think of a couple of times I was stuck and didn’t want to get out of bed to face the days challenges. One was when my Dad died unexpectedly; another was when I faced a career crisis and hated going to work. Those days I just wanted to crawl into the fetal position, pull the bed covers above my head and hide from the world. Eventually, I got out of bed and took that first step towards making positive changes.

If any of you find yourself sinking/stuck, I encourage you to find a way to move forward even if it’s a very small step and reach out to those you trust to help you start on a new path to a better path for your life. Call a friend, have a meeting with your church leader, a counselor, or an OB member willing to talk with you. You can DM me anytime. The key is to not remain stagnant, reach out, don’t stay isolated; there are many willing to help.

I wish you all a great start to your week.
