"Why you're running on spiritual empty." - Ron Hutchcraft

A friend we all know at TG @NativeTex sent me this story he found, so I’d like to paraphrase it for Today’s Gift.

When my wife and kids would take a long road trip with me they used to occasionally say, “Hey Dad, you’re on E! Sometimes I didn’t pay attention to the fuel gauge and I typically would let the tank get almost empty before filling it up again. It would drive my wife especially crazy, pun intended.

It’s not smart to run on empty, in fact, car experts will tell you to try and keep your gas tank at least half full.

In Luke 10:38-42 it says…

Now as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who was also seated at the Lord’s feet, and was listening to His word. 40 But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do the serving by myself? Then tell her to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; 42 but only one thing is necessary; for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”

In this passage Martha is miserable and she has Jesus right there in her house! How can one be miserable if Jesus is in your house? The reason is Martha was distracted with all the tasks she was doing for Jesus. In the Greek language, distracted means dragged or pulled away. All of her tasks pulled her away from Jesus.

Jesus told Martha that sitting at His feet and listening to Him was the better thing to do. He was basically saying to Martha…"Martha, more important to Me than the tasks you're doing for me is our time together."

It would be best to take heed of this warning; sometimes we get so busy trying to do tasks for our Creator that we end up not spending time with Him, i.e. running on an empty spiritual tank. We should first strive to listen to him; fill up our tanks with His love, then you can get busy doing what He wants to do through you, not what you want to do for Him.

When I get in a hurry to get where I’m going, I don’t like to stop to get gas, however, the result is stress and sometimes eventually going nowhere. We should stop every morning for a fill-up. We'll enjoy the drive a lot more, and the people who ride with you…they'll enjoy your drive a lot more.

“Fill her up please!”
