“I’m not a gumball machine” – CAL

The quote above is something my business partner once said to one of our clients at a trade show. We were launching a new version of our software, and a longtime client came up to him and started complaining about not having a feature they had been waiting on to be added to our package. It was a legit complaint, and he acknowledged that fact. But this client became a bit abusive, and my business partner responded in frustration with the quote above.

Creating software is an extremely tedious process and when you have a type of software where the slightest bug can cause potential harm, you have to pay attention to detail and that takes TIME. Eventually, this client’s “wish” was implemented, and they were very happy.

Sometimes I think we treat our Creator as a gumball machine. We pay a price (put in our coin) or pray, and we expect an immediate positive answer to our request, i.e. a sweet gumball. When we don’t get our gumball, we start to complain or worse, doubt that the machine has our best interest.

The reality is…this is not how our relationship with Him works. We are not promised to have every wish/request granted, rather if those requests are within His will, His timeline, His process, they will be granted. Sometimes the answer is a flat out no or not now or eventual yes. We don’t have a bird’s eye view of our lives, so often a no or not now is exactly the answer we need to help build our faith or to keep us from harm that we cannot see.

I have found that our Creator answers all prayers, it just may not be the answer we desired, but it is what’s best for us in our life’s journey.
