In my Grief Recovery practice, I have an analogy I like to use that explains part of our recovery process. Grief can put one in a deep hole of pain. The Grief Recovery Method provides a ladder into the hole so that the griever can each week of 7 weeks take one step up the ladder and at the end of the process, they have crawled out of the grief hole. It’s a step-by-step process.

Whether you are a recovering griever, a recovering alcohol abuser or drug addict, you know, each day remaining sober is one more step up the ladder of successfully releasing yourself from destructive behavior.

As I tell my clients, you shouldn’t grieve alone, nor should any of us try to recover from destructive behaviors alone. We need to reach out for assistance and not be ashamed to seek professional help. Also, as a friend or loved one, just being present can go a long way to helping someone recover.

I recently went to my stepmom’s funeral; I was the only one of my family that could attend. A couple of weeks later, I received one of the sweetest letters from my stepsister thanking me for being there to support them. You would have thought I gave her a pot of gold, but no…just being there, crying with her, talking about how much we loved her mom/my stepmom meant the world to her.

We don’t have to be experts; we just need to be available.
