You will never reach your destination if you stop and throw stones at every dog that barks.
~~~~~~~~~ Winston Churchill
Or, borrowing from the world of sports, Keep your eye on the ball. If your goal is legitimate and achievable, don't let distractions prevent you from getting to the finish line. Plan accordingly, and if your plan isn't working, change the plan, not the goal.
A guy named Noriyuki Morita developed a rare spinal infection at the age of two. He was hospitalized for nine years, and was told he'd never walk again. But walk he did, at age 11 when a surgeon performed a fusion procedure. Finally he was able to form a new and improved set of goals for his life, and he became an engineer. Successful but not satisfied, he became a stand-up comedian and joined an improv group in LA. His continued dedication led to a few acting gigs; you might know him better as Pat Morita, whose role as Mr. Miyagi in The Karate Kid earned him an Oscar nomination.
James reminds us that we "do not know what will happen tomorrow...your life is a vapor that appears for a little while then vanishes. Instead you ought to say 'If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or do that.' " James 4:13-17
Today, we will stay true to our legitimate goals and purposes, and with God's help, we will not be distracted.
In loving memory of Allen Jones, who learned first to succeed in recovery.
PS Sorry I was late this morning. Long story. I was throwing stones at barking dogs. Guilty as charged.
