What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the world, remains and is, immortal.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Albert Pike
Zack Conti earned a spot as an OL on the football team at Eastern Michigan as a walk-on. He worked multiple jobs to stay in school and make ends meet. About a year ago, he was running out of steam, and approached his coach about a scholarship, but there were none available. At that point, he began to accept the reality that he had to give up football, so he could work more hours to pay for the completion of his education.
Enter Brian Dooley, a fellow lineman in his final year of eligibility.
He went to head coach Chris Creighton with a novel idea: he wanted to "give" his scholarship to Conti. He and his family had agreed that Dooley could pay his own way that last year, while Conti used the scholarship to stay in school, and play the game he loved. Said Dooley, "The O-line brotherhood is hard to break. If somebody works that hard, and they deserve a scholarship, then I want to give it to them." In August 2023, Dooley and Coach Creighton surprised Conti with the good news, "You're on scholarship!"
Whose hard work can we recognize? A little help and recognition go a long way.
God bless you all on this gorgeous Sunday morning! Thanks again to all of you who made TG so special yesterday. We all learned a lot, and found great joy in sharing memories of childhood and fathers.
