On the calendar, it is the 4th of July, but it is far more than that. In much the same way that December 25 is Christmas Day, July 4 is Independence Day. A day to fly your flag, to take pride in who you are and where you live. A day to ask ourselves, How can I make it better?
In addressing the Brooklyn 14th Regiment in 1861, Henry Ward Beecher reminded them (and now us):
"On the American flag, stars and stripes of many-colored lights shine out together.
The stars upon it were like the bright morning stars of God,
and the stripes upon it were the beams of morning light.
It is the banner of Dawn. It means Liberty....
Look up and see the bright stars and the glorious stripes over your own head, and read in them,
LIBERTY!"
The battle for freedom is never-ending. Freedom is not a light switch, but a sunrise, teasing the dark early morning sky with hints of light and the promise of more to come. Cherish every moment, my friends, today and every day.
