Here is what Texas football coach Tom Herman said after Saturday’s spring scrimmage:
--- Chris Brown is being evaluated at the hospital for lung issues, according to Herman. He said is not life-threatening; Sam Ehlinger does not have the mumps, but still has a lot of soreness and swelling in his throat; Rob Cummins reaggravated a knee injury this week and will have it scoped on Monday; Christian Jones was diagnosed with a high ankle sprain, but Herman is optimistic the offensive lineman will return next week; B.J. Foster (concussion) could return on Monday; Bru McCoy (shoulder) could return to practice on Monday; Reese Leitao has a minor ankle injury and received limited reps on Friday and Saturday; Marquez Bimage (shoulder) could return to live contact on Monday; DeGabriel Floyd had an MRI on his spine this past Friday and they are waiting for the results; Keondre Coburn fully participated in the scrimmage.
--- Herman said they did not script any scenarios for the scrimmage. He wanted simulated a game-like atmosphere for the young players on his team.
--- Members of the first-team played 51 snaps, and the twos compiled 54.
--- Overall, Herman said the Texas offense won the battle on Saturday. However, the defense did force two turnovers.
--- One of the turnovers was an interception by Jeffrey McCulloch. The other was a bad snap that was recovered by the defense, according to Herman.
--- Herman seemed disappointed that his team became tired during the scrimmage and said they have to do a better job as coaches.
--- Herman on Casey Thompson’s scrimmage performance: “Casey was pretty nervous yesterday. I think that affected him a little bit Today, he looked good. He’s got a long way to go, but for a guy that has never taken a snap in a game running with the first-team offense, I thought he operated it well and made some really good decisions. Looked good.”
--- Roschon Johnson took the second-team snaps, according to Herman.
--- Herman said Malcolm Epps had most of the big plays among the receivers on Saturday. Other guys with big plays were Keaontay Ingram, Jordan Whittington and Kirk Johnson. Herman described the running backs as “fairly explosive” at times on Saturday.
--- DeMarvion Overshown has been getting reps at safety, while Josh Thompson has been starting at nickel.
--- Herman said Malcolm Roach is the defensive lineman who shows up the most right now, but Ta’Quon Graham’s first seven practices have been good.
--- Herman said tight end Cade Brewer has been doing great during spring practice: “Cade’s played a lot of football, unfortunately, as a true freshman. He’s added a lot of strength and mass. I think he’s 255 [pounds] now. He played at 235 his freshman year, 230 maybe.”
--- Herman’s message to Longhorn fans: “The spring game is two weeks away. Last year’s atmosphere was as good as anybody around here could remember. Night game. It was exciting. It was buzzing. We want to make sure we make it even better this year. We have a concert for our fans. It’s a night kickoff. It’s going to be a heck of a time. These guys have been working really hard for Texas. One of the ways I feel like our fans can show their appreciation is to be present, be loud, have a good time, make a weekend out of it, and get a chance to see Ludacris play.”
