2020 QB Hunter Dunn – Tomball – Tells me it was a great visit overall, including talking to the coaches and getting to meet Matthew McConaughey, who addressed the recruits
“He was just talking about the best players in Texas need to stay in Texas. He said there’s no better place than the University of Texas,” Dunn said.
Of note, Tim Beck was at Tomball last week and saw Dunn throw and liked what he saw. That’s how this weekend’s visit got set up. Dunn will visit A&M in a couple weeks as well.
Dunn came up with WR Demond Demas and tells me Demas enjoyed the visit as well. Demas, of course, is still technically committed to A&M but I think he’s now visited Texas about a half dozen times since giving the Aggies a pledge. There's some chatter from the A&M side that the visit didn't go well, but I haven't heard from Demas directly. Checking with a few sources on that.
2:15 p.m. update - I did talk to a source who said the visit with Demas did not go as well as it could have. If true, Texas will have to make up some ground in that one. Demas himself hasn't commented. Long way to go in this one, so I'd caution anyone from getting too worked up.
---- 2020 RB Jase McClellan – Aledo – Said he spent a lot of time talking to Tim Beck, Stan Drayton and Tom Herman. He’s still committed to Oklahoma but said Texas stands as one of his top schools. LSU, Georgia and Penn State are others that have caught his attention.
McClellan said in order for a school to pull him away from OU, it would have to offer early playing time. Stan Drayton told him he’s going to play all his freshmen backs.
“That’s a big thing for me,” McClellan said.
--- 2020 OL Chad Lindberg – Clear Creek – He’s on his way home so we’re going to connect later, but I still feel like the Longhorns are in a good spot here.
--- 2020 OL Jake Majors – Prosper – Said it was a really good visit overall and he spent a lot of time hanging out with Texas QB commitment Hudson Card, OL commit Logan Parr and OL targets Lindberg and Jaylen Garth.
“It was a great visit overall. I loved hanging out with the coaches. They treat me like family when I’m there.
“It was great hanging out with coach (Herb) Hand. He was just trying to show me why I should choose Texas. Having Logan Parr there to show me around was cool, as well as Hudson.”
Majors on Matthew McConaughey …
“He was basically just saying Texas is the place to be. He said he could be anywhere in the world right now, but he’s in Austin because he believes in what they’re doing,” Majors said.
This one is trending very well for Texas.
--- I mentioned in another tread discussing Port Neches-Groves 2020 OL Jaylen Garth, but things went very well.
The one quote you need to know … "I think for sure Texas is probably at the top of my list right now, honestly," Garth said. "They’re definitely at the top of my list."
Garth picked up an offer from LSU yesterday and may go check them out at some point. Texas is in a great spot with this one but it may not end quite as quickly as some were thinking/hoping.
--- 2020 DE Vernon Broughton – Cypress Ridge – Said what stood out to him was his talks with Tom Herman and Oscar Giles, and seeing the plans for the stadium/football office upgrades.
Broughton told me he’s more likely to stay close to home, which could definitely work in UT’s favor.
He doesn’t have any other visits planned and doesn’t have a formal list of favorites, but did tell me he knows Texas would be in his top three if he was to release one. Oklahoma would also be in there, while he’s not sure of who the third spot would go to.
--- 2020 DE Prince Dorbah - Highland Park – He came in early yesterday and was home before some other guys arrived, but said it was a “great trip” overall.
--- 2020 LB LB Brennan Scott - Bishop Dunne – He picked up a UT offer last night, which was big. Scott doesn’t have a formal list of favorites but said Texas is up there and he’s “very interested in them.”
He’s trying to go to LSU at some point and may go visit Nebraska as well. He said the highlight of the trip was the photo shoot and getting to meet with the academic personnel that are on hand for the football program.
Scott said he’s pretty open at this stage and isn’t sure if he’ll commit/sign early or wait things out.
--- 2020 CB Jaylon Jones - Cibolo Steele – When I talked with Jones, he was still in Austin and was hanging out with UT freshman and former Steele teammate Caden Sterns.
Jones said it was a good visit overall. He brought his family with him and everyone had a good time.
He said Texas is “definitely at the top” but said he’s also eyeing some others, including Texas A&M and Florida. He’s going to take spring official visit to all three of t hose programs and plans to decide this summer, so getting him on campus this weekend was a big development.
Look for this one to come down to a Texas-Texas A&M battle, IMO, since Jones said he wouldn’t mind staying close to home. I like Texas’ position right now but it’s pretty close.
--- 2020 S Bryson Washington – Houston C.E. King – Told me it was a great visit and the highlight was talking to the coaches and the players.
“Everybody says you can’t really enjoy the school unless you hang out with players and see the community,” Washington said. “The Best part was hanging out with the players, seeing how the guys were, how they interact with everyone. It was great.”
Washington hung quite a bit with Jaylon Jones and Caden Sterns, on and off campus.
Texas still very high on Washington’s list but he did say he still wants to check out some other schools as well. My gut tells me the Longhorns are the team to beat right now.
Washington on Matthew McConaughey being around …
“Man, when he pulled up, I was like man I have to get a picture with him. It’s crazy how UT has the best alumni from what I’ve seen,” Washington said. “Ride or die, he’s still here. Like he said, I could be anywhere, but I’m here on a Saturday night with you guys.”
--- FYI, I’ve reached out to Zachary Evans but haven’t heard back yet. I did communicate with his brother briefly, but he hasn’t had a chance to talk to Zach yet about the visit. I’ll follow up with him later.
