How often does the president of the US make a case for American citizens who are arrested abroad?

For stealing sun glasses probably never. Entitled little shits and I'm sure helping them will only make them more entitled!

Of all the problems in the world, our President and government have to waste their time on this. It will be interesting to see the punishment UCLA hands out (if any).

Look no further than his loser dad, who he has for a role model. The whole family is a bunch of douchebags.

One of my pet peeves is when Americans get arrested abroad the families and public put pressure on the state department and/or the White House to intervene. Yet those same people when someone from another country gets arrested here say “if your gonna come to America respect our laws damnit!”

My dad and brother were both in the navy. They have said that anytime thry went to another country especially countries that are a little different they always say look these are the rules so stay out of trouble. I imagine that was done for these kids as well.

Bottom line though is weather it’s China, US, Iran, North Korea, etc one thing they all have in common is stealing is illegal. To me these kids should of known better and should of had to suffer the punishment whatever it was gonna be.

We probably never agree on anything UT Football related but I agree with this. You may end up going to a country where you didn't know something was illegal like porn but EVERYONE knows stealing is illegal. There maybe stiffer penalties in certain countries but you shouldn't be stealing period. Idiots!

I'll never forget the first time I went to Malaysia and I read the sign in the airport about trafficking drugs. I nearly shit myself because I had Advil in my luggage.

I suspect we probably agree more than you realize. Some of my actual views have been a bit distorted to fit agendas. I imagine we’re more on the same page than not if you knew my actual views.

You are right though man stealing is stealing. Morons. I know my dad was in Singapore and he said they have some crazy laws like it’s ilegal to chew gum, spit on the sidewalk. Crazy shit like that.

Don't do the crime if you can't do the time. Reminds me of that kid who got caned in Singapore or Thailand back in the 90s for vandalizing cars.

Singapore. A former Marine offered to take his place. Don' remember exactly what ended up happening but I know the kid was hitting car bumpers with a newspaper to make the alarms go off.

Talk about a stiff penalty.

I thought he was spray painting them? I was about 10 when that was going on so it's stuck with me to not mess around in Asia.

What is the punishment in China for stealing ?I heard some countries will chop your fingers off.My guess stealing is very low.The laws on retail stealing in the USA is a joke, harsher penalties, less stealing.I have seen parents send their children into a store to steal.

3-10 years prison time for stealing in China is what has been reported. So yeah pretty stiff compared to us.

I would be ok with them kicking the guys off the team. That was just insanely dumb

Exactly where I was going to go.

If the punishment for petty theft is something crazy -- like chopping hands off or 10+ years in prison -- then it makes sense for the State Department to intervene. (That is, what we have left of a State Dept.)

If it's jail time for a (semi-) reasonable period, then deal with the consequences on your own.

But the President of the United States??!? Bigger fish to fry.

He knows if he hadn't said something, the media would have said:
"Something something black kids and racism, something something, Trump Nazi, something something" ........

So it's just easier to go "Hey man, those kids are stupid, go easy on them--"

The fact that Trump was in China during this whole thing almost required him to do something. They were probably fortunate by timing more than anything else. Plus Trump gets some public praise which is important to him.

Totally disagree.

He had no business in doin what he did.
Now, he owes it to every American who breaks the law in every part of the world to do the same thing.

Thinking about it, that might be a better use of his time.

Well that’s the problem as I stated in my original post. We as Americans break thelaw in other countries and nearly every time without fail there is Private and/or public pressure on the state department or White House to do something. I wish they wouldn’t maybe people would be more careful

Now look you won’t get any argument from me that stealing is ilegal everywhere and these kids should of known better. I’m also to no fan of Trump at all. Given the fact this this was a national story and he was meeting with the Chinese President already. Not sure he could just act like it hadn’t happened. I’d be more critical had he like made a special trip over there or something like that.

Maybe Clob has a point. Maybe. ;)

But this tweet?
Donald J. Trump
(@realDonaldTrump)
Do you think the three UCLA Basketball Players will say thank you President Trump? They were headed for 10 years in jail!

Like Trump or don’t you have to admit that his goal was achieved here which was getting thanked publicly and some postive PR. The guys ego and need to be liked knows no bounds.

MY guess this was not the first time stealing for these guys but they just got caught.Im not sure what the punishment should be but an example of what will happen to other student athletes who do the same.

Read that Lavar is mouthing off, suggesting the POTUS didn’t help...it would be worse if his son was stealing when he was a 12 year old vs now. Idiot.
