I’ve never been a fan of Rory, because I always thought he was overrated, and the way he dumped his fiancé (via text AFTER sending out invitations I believe) and still do. I’ve actually gained some respect for him over the years, especially after watching Full Swing, but also recognize it could be edited in his favor.
In this case I’ve got to side with him about approaching the heckler, but shouldn’t have taken his phone. Just tell him to shut the fvck up. I don’t think he knew who the heckler was, but that’s irrelevant. Potter should have known better, probably had enjoyed some libations.
A quote from the article:
He's got a hole in his heart," Texas golf coach John Fields told Golf.com of Potter. "He had no idea that what was coming out of his mouth was going to result in this fashion“.
Fields is a great coach and man, but he is just speaking coach speak to somewhat protect his player. No idea what was coming out of his mouth was going to result in this fashion? How about not opening your mouth like that? There would be no “end in this fashion”.
Listen, I get it. He’s a young kid, very good golfer, even a bigger reason why he should have known better. I just can’t picture Scottie, Jordan, Kite, Ben and others heckling from outside the ropes.
Potter should have known better and I hope he was sincere in his apology and walks away a better person after this. Lesson learned.
