The Longhorns (21-2, 7-1) and aggies (10-10, 3-5) face each other for the 88th time Sunday but the first as conference opponents since March 12, 2012. This will not be Vic's 1st trip back to CS since taking over on the Forty Acres - his Longhorn team beat aggy 76-60 in the Big12/SEC Challenge in 2021. Texas leads the series 63-24.
Aggy lost their leading scorer 6' G Aicha Coulibaly (12.8 ppg), a 2-time All-SEC Second Team player, for the remainder of the season in their 51-64 loss to then #5 LSU last Sunday. In their 1 game without her, they really struggled to score, losing 72-51 to Arkansas Thursday. Without Coulibaly, 6' G Sahara Jones (9.9) has their highest points scored.
A&M's leading rebounders are Sahara Jones (7.0) and 6' 5" F Lauren Ware (6.9). As a team, they are +2.5 boards per game but -2.4 in turnover differential (17.2 turnovers a game). In addition to Ware, aggy has 6' 3" forwards Jada Malone and Amirah Abdur-Rahim giving them some length though Malone is a bit of a whistle magnet (2.5 fouls per 17 minutes played).
It seems there's at least 1 of these every week but a familiar face will be on the opponents' bench - former Longhorn G Kyndall Hunter. A high school teammate of Rori's, Hunter spent 2 years at Texas before transferring in May 2023 to aggy. She redshirted last season and is getting 14.2 minutes per game this season (18 games, 1 start) but hasn't seen the court the last 2 games.
This game should be an opportunity to rest some of the starters but I thought the same about last night's game. Aggy upset then #11 Kentucky last Thursday but that was with Coulibaly scoring more than 33% of their points (21 of 61). I would feel much more comfortable if A-Mo and Justice were feeling well enough to play after missing last night's game with the flu.
