I think this may be a case of Vic doing a favor for a sister program within the UT system. The Longhorns (11-0) will be playing their penultimate non-conference game in Edinburg against UTRGV (0-9) Wednesday. 5 of the Vaqueros losses were by 6 points or less - the largest margin was a 42-point defeat at the talons of the Sand Witch in Lubbock.

UTRGV does have some size with 3 players 6'3"-6'4" but only 6'4" Charlotte O'Keefe gets consistent minutes (30.8 per game). 5'6" G Iyana Dorsey leads the team in scoring (16.4), assists (2.6), and steals (1.8). This game should be an opportunity for a lot of the Texas bench players to log a lot of minutes.

Texas Notes:
  • With 493 assists in 78 games, Rori's 6.3 assists per game sits #1 in program history. Rori was dang good for a freshman (5.0 apg) but in the 42 games combined as a sophomore and junior? It's an eye-popping 7.5. Longhorn great Kamie Ethridge (career 5.9 apg - 2nd) is the all-time leader in total assists at 776. Rori is currently 5th (493) with 20 games left this season. If she continues on her junior pace (7.7), she'll be at 647 when the conference schedule ends - good enough to be 40 assists better than the current 2nd place (Terri Mackey - 605) with another season to go.
  • Speaking of program records, C Taylor Jones is on pace to shatter the current single-season mark (Cinietra Henderson - 64.9% in 1992-93). Taylor is shooting 71.3% through 11 games. I expect to see that rate decline going against much better centers during conference play but it'll be something to keep an eye on.
  • Freshman W Madison Booker may not be posting the eye-popping stats some of the other members of 2023 recruiting class are but she's 3rd in scoring (11.5) and 2nd in assists (4.1) for a Top 5 team. While she has thus far avoided one of the common freshmen scourges (fouls - 2.3/game). She does sit last on the team in turnovers per game (1.9) but considering how well the team as a whole usually takes care of the ball, that's pretty good for a freshman doing as much as she's being asked to.
Any OBs in the vicinity need to get their butts over to Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg Wednesday.
