This will be the 3rd game of 4 with the Longhorns (9-1) are travelling, returning to Virginia where they were last Sunday, to face Richmond (9-1). The Spiders have had a great start to their season and are currently receiving votes in the AP poll. Their 1 loss was a 2-point grind it out affair with Georgetown when both teams really struggled to score. They picked up a win over Okie Lite in late November but are kicking off a brutal 3-game stretch against the SEC: #6 Texas, #19 Tennessee (12/20) and RV Alabama (12/21) who just fell out of the Top 25.

The Spiders have significant experience on their roster : 6 Grad students, a senior, a redshirt junior and 3 juniors. Junior 6' 1" G Rachel Ullstrom is their leading scorer at 16.2 ppg and 2nd on the team in rebounding (5.9). Junior 6' 2" F Maggie Doogan leads with 6.3 rpg and is 2nd in points (15.0 ppg). No other Spider is averaging more than 8.7 points or 3.3 boards. As is the case with most undersized mid-majors, they love the 3-pter, 232 attempts (43% of their 540 shot attempts) in 10 games and are connecting on 39.7% as a team. Texas has taken almost 100 fewer shots from distance out of 660 shot attempts and make 30.1%.

Richmond is +6.6 rebounds per game and +1.1 in turnovers. Those are 2 of Texas' strengths: +14.2 boards, +10.2 turnovers.

Texas Notes:
  • Scoring: Madison, Taylor and Kyla are the team's top scorers at 17.1, 11.3 and 10.6 points per game. Rori is just under the double digit threshold at 9.9.
  • Rebounding: Kyla's 7.1 rebounds off the bench leads the team followed by Taylor (5.8) and Madison (5.7).
  • Depth: 11 players have more than 14 minutes per game. Jordana (5.1) and Sarah (3.0) have only played in 7 and 4 games respectively.
  • Madison is connecting on 57.9% of her 3s (11/19, 57.9%) while Jordan's streak of 7-straight over the JMU/Southern games has her at 40.9% (9/22).
  • Shay has yet to find consistency from distance. She was hot against SMSU (2/4), Lamar (3/5) and Notre Dame (4/8) but was 1 of 20 in the Longhorns' other 7 games. Last season she was 37.6% from beyond the arc but has dropped to 27.0% so far.
  • Rori seems to have spent her rehab time working on her FT shooting. In her first 2 full seasons, she shot 65.8% from the charity stripe. This season so far? 82.6% (19/23).
The Longhorns, as expected, are the prohibitive favorite with ESPN has them at 95.7% likelihood to win. This matchup and the game against South Dakota State Jackrabbits are the toughest matchups of the 4 remaining non-conference tilts before opening their inaugural SEC season. The Jackrabbits already have 2 wins against ranked opponents (#21 Creighton, #21 Oregon) and put a scare into #9 Duke in a 4-point loss, 75-71.
