In the latest projections, Texas is the 1-seed in Birmingham Regional 4, with South Carolina the 1-seed in Birmingham Regional 1. The women's regionals are held at 2 sites (Birmingham and Spokane) meaning that should the seeding hold out, it will be the Longhorns vs Gamecocks IV to advance to the championship game. Getting there will be a challenge because UCONN is the #2 seed in Birmingham-4. On a positive note, I like Creme's projection for the Texas portion of the bracket with 5-seed Maryland (Horns dominated them in DC) and 4-seed North Carolina (Iowa State transfer G Lexi Donarski is well known to Texas and I think the Longhorns match up well against them).
In other news, AAC regular season winner UTSA (26-4, 17-1) lost their 1st game (quarterfinal) of the AAC conference tourney and it's highly unlikely they'll make the NCAA tournament. Why do I mention the Roadrunners? They are coached by former Texas HC Karen Aston and I thought some might be curious. Aston was named the conference coach of the year and UTSA's Jordyn Jenkins was the conference POTY. UTSA lost 3 games prior to the conference tournament: 4-point loss to aggy, 5-point loss to Stanford and their one conference loss was by 12 on the road to USF. The AAC only has 1 guaranteed entry to the NCAA tournament and the committee has almost always picked a mediocre Power 4/5 team over a mid-major regular season winner option.
NCAA Tournament Timeline:
A wave of upsets came crashing down on a trio of conference tournament No. 1 seeds Monday, likely costing dominant regular-season champs NCAA tournament berths. UTSA was the victim of the day's biggest surprise, an AAC tournament quarterfinal loss to Rice. James Madison, which went undefeated in Sun Belt play, gave up a late lead and lost to No. 2 seed Arkansas State in the semifinals. The Dukes' next game will probably be in the WBIT, and Gonzaga might be joining them. After falling to Oregon State in the WCC semifinals, the Zags will likely miss the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2016.
