After their recent string of victories over 4 ranked opponents, 3 in the Top 10, the #2 Longhorns (26-2, 12-1) get a much needed rest with a "Bye" this week - their next game is @ Georgia (10-16, 2-10) Monday. SEC teams get 2 byes during the conference schedule but Vic gave 1 of them up to participate in the Coretta Scott King Classic on January 20th, defeating then #8 Maryland 89-51. During his post game press conference Sunday, Vic said he would give the team the next 2 days off and said he didn't want them in the gym. Based on Rori's facial expression, she'll choose to ignore the second half of his statement.
After Georgia, the Longhorns are on the road to Starkville in Vic's 1st return to Mississippi State (18-9, 5-8) since taking the Texas job and then a final conference home game against Florida (13-13, 4-8).
The game against the Gators will be an emotional one for Shay and Taylor - Senior Night.
It's incredible to think that Shay was the 2nd best member (#97 overall) of Karen Aston's worst recruiting class behind #86 Ashley Chevalier. Shay bleeds burnt orange so she stuck with her commitment despite the coaching change and no guarantee of playing time under a new coach who immediately picked up some high profile commitments from future classes. Shay just put her head down and went to work. As a freshman, she saw action in 23 games and only averaged 7.5 minutes. She was a bench player to begin her 2nd and 3rd years but started the last 14 games each season due to injuries. In her 4th season, she played in 38 games, starting 26 and averaged 32.7 minutes. In this her final season (Covid year), she has started all 28 games. During her tenure on the 40 Acres, she's set the program record for games played and games won, graduated from McCombs in 3 years, is very close to getting her Master's, was a 2024 All Big12 Honorable Mention and made the Big12 All-Defensive Team.
Something all of us will be keeping an eye on is whether Rori is listed as a participant in Senior Night. She can choose to return next season after being granted a medical redshirt for 2023-2024. I don't have any inside information but I would be surprised if she doesn't return. According to the ESPN and Bleacher Report Mock Drafts, she'll be an undrafted FA. Some players can make really good money overseas but those are established stars and high profile draft picks.
If the Longhorns can avoid any losses in their final 3 games where they will be heavy favorites, they will at least share the SEC Regular Season title with South Carolina.
