Wednesday was a slow day as relates to news surrounding the Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian’s new staff. Sarkisian is focused on getting Alabama ready for its national title game on Monday, and using his spare time to assemble a staff in Austin. However, here is where we stand at this moment.
Quarterbacks coach
Arkansas State offensive coordinator/former Alabama analyst A.J. Milwee appears to be a lock for this position. Milwee is regarded as Sarkisian’s right-hand man, and he is expected to manage and develop quarterbacks at Texas. It is seemingly just a matter of time before Milwee is announced after Alabama’s season concludes and Sarkisian arrives in Austin.
Running backs coach
Stan Drayton confirmed he would remain in Texas through a tweet on Tuesday. He is on the second-year of a two-year deal that will pay him $650,000 in 2021.
Receivers coach
We previously reported Alabama receivers coach Holmon Wiggins is expected to follow Sarkisian to Texas, and that has seemingly not changed. Current receivers coach Andre Coleman remains on the Longhorns staff, but will probably be replaced after Sarkisian settles in.
Tight Ends coach
Alabama tight ends coach and special teams coordinator Jeff Banks was a candidate, but he decided to remain on Nick Saban’s staff. Banks is apparently happy with the Crimson Tide, which means Sarkisian is still looking to fill this position. If Sarkisian is unable to hire one of “his guys,” currently special teams coordinator Jay Boulware has two years remaining on his current contract if the coach exhausts all options.
Offensive Line coach
Here are some offensive line drills by Kyle Flood, who is expected to coach that position at Texas
Defensive Line coach
Atlanta Falcons defensive line coach/run game coordinator Tosh Lupoi is still considering joining Sarkisian’s staff. However, my NFL sources indicated Lupoi is conflicted because he is not 100 percent ready to give up on the professional level right now. If Lupoi decides to go elsewhere, Oscar Giles is always an option - if Sarkasian is interested.
Linebackers coach
We expect to hear more about this position in the upcoming days. Cincinnati’s Marcus Freeman was a defensive coordinator/linebackers coach this past season, and LSU is interested in him holding a similar position in Baton Rogue. Considering Mississippi State’s Zach Arnett could join this staff as a defensive coordinator, Sarkisian must see what happens with Freeman and LSU. Sarkisian still has Coleman Hutzler as an option - if interested.
Defensive Backs coach
Blake Gideon is reportedly in
Defensive Coordinator
Arnett appears to be the top choice. Nothing has changed, but we will continue to monitor the situation.
Strength and Conditioning Coach
Cal’s Torre Becton is the name I heard earlier today.
“According to the Cal website, Becton spent the five prior seasons as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Washington, the first three under head coach Steve Sarkisian and another two after being retained by Chris Petersen. He was the also associate head strength and conditioning coach at USC in 2016 before joining Cal.”
Here are a few videos of Becton:
