- Tell 'em you heard about it on OB Live or just mention my name.
- Hope everyone has a safe and Happy Valentine's Day. I met my wife because of that "artificial holiday". Here's to others having that story to tell one day...now onto the real pain...
What a week to be a Dallas sports fan. The Eagles win their second Super Bowl in blowout fashion, and Luka plays his first games in Laker yellow. I've had a long time to process the Cowboys' side of things, but the Luka stuff? I'm still working through it.
Look, I'm one of those "true fans". I can't leave a team. I was born 30 miles from Dallas. 1st Rangers game?...I was 4. Mavs? Like 6 or 7. I had attended a Cowboys home game by age 10. The Stars, by the way, came to Dallas as I started college. They always feel different to me. So The Mavs are my NBA team until I die. It's just gonna take time. I made myself watch Kyrie, Klay, and the rest this week. They even beat The Warriors. And Luka lost his second game with LA. Is that how I'll keep score now? Always have the two on an ever-moving scale? We'll see.
But also this week, I've been thinking about a fan I don't know. The 10-year-old Mavs fan that had to be told Luka was being traded. And if you were really honest with them, or maybe they asked, you had to tell them Luka didn't want to go. That 77 jersey was gonna be too small at some point, but to have to take it off like this? That has to be tough. I never had to eat one like that as a kid. So what's better, being me or being that kid?
The 50-year-old can tell you about 5 championships for the "Big 3" in D-Town, but they also carry the pain of The Cowboys from 1996 to now. They had the Mavs in 2006 and The Rangers in 2011. Of course The Rangers got a title in 2023, but only after The Astros got 2. The Mavs got revenge on The Heat in 2011, but now this Luka story will dominate the remaining headlines of my life for that team.
If you're 10 right now, you had The Rangers in 2023, but the rest is just stories. You know what the Cowboys are, and maybe you aren't haunted by what they are "supposed to be" or "used to be". And you got to see your Mavericks go to the Finals and get beat by a better team. No nightmare Game 6 or 7 scenarios or "what ifs". Better luck next season, right? Right? That is, unless they trade Luka. How could they? Why would they? The 50-year-old can't answer that. The 10-year-old must still be reeling.
I hope that kid sees something that helps them forget the pain of Luka. Not sure I will as a Dallas sports fan.
Go Rangers...Go Mavs...Go Cowboys. And God help us all.
