By no means am I making an excuse for our defense, but I have to say, there was some BAD defense all over the country this weekend, especially in the Big 12. The season isn't over, unfortunately, we are looking at 8 weeks of shoot outs. Hold on to your hats.
So what to do about this defense? I thought with two weeks to go over assignments and do some fundamental work on angles, the secondary would be respectable. They were not. Jones played the first series and missed a tackle on the touchdown run, and I don't remember seeing much of him after that. It was the same base group from Cal for most of the game, and they were worse after two weeks to work. Any real change they could have made had to be done in the bye week. I don't see anyway meaningful improvement coming from practice lead by this staff. Maybe the light will come on purely from learning by error. That's about all we can hope for.
