I mean who actually good at game planning, developing players, game day adjustments, motivating players etc.
Basically, everything to do with football.

People like Jimbo Fisher only excel at recruiting and media relations. They are not football coaches.

Who is your opinion are the real coaches out there in college football?
Who are the fakes?

Look man--- this is a super slippery slope you just climbed out on.

You have your "Jimmy's and Joe's" coaches and you have your X's and O's coaches.

So let's looks at the X's and O's coaches first.

David Cutcliffe at Duke is an INCREDIBLE QB coach. The guy just knows how to coach. Brent Venables is also and X's and O's coach-- but Brent has always been blessed with the Jimmy's and Joe's.

Good coaches can take good personnel and make them play well. Great coaches can take average personnel and make your life hell. Great recruiting coaches that are also great XO coaches can take great J&J's and bash your head in with a tire iron.

Offensive coaches abound right now in college football. Just look across the landscape.

Great defensive coaches, however are more difficult to find. Why? Because of the continual changing landscape of college football.

I may get slaughtered here but Briles Imo was the real deal. A couple of years ago they won their bowl game with a 4th string qb that was actually a wr by trade. Changed their whole offense for that game and won. Anyone else wouldn't have even showed up

I played high school ball against Briles when he was at Stephenville and Kendal played quarterback. Those were some of the most well coached teams I have ever seen to this day. Ya we were on the other end of a few ass kickings from those teams.

It is evident that the upper echelon programs definitely need coaches who excel at both.

I would not say that Mack Brown ever took Texas to those levels. He was close, but his shortcomings as a football coach (except two years) always resulted in us being close to the top. On an average his teams underachieved.

Herman appears to be not as effective as a recruiter. Maybe recruiting today at Texas is much harder than it was when Mack was here.
But, Herman is certainly doing very well as a football coach. Holding on to Todd Orlando is going to be vital for him.
If Orlando can become our 'Venables', we will do very well.

With Texas ponying up and paying Orlando $2 million/year, that helps to keep him around. He's eventually going to leave for a head coaching gig, but at the money he's making at Texas now, he can afford to be choosy as far as what jobs to consider.

I can’t see any reason you’d catch hell, Briles was a great coach. His issue was with the players he recruited and turning a blind eye when they went rapey.... not his coaching ability.

Great coach

Slime ball human

KK has proven to be a QB coaching god as is Riley. Neither know a thing about defense, and it shows.

Few coaches are great at every apect of football, generally they come from a background of one side of the ball or the other. This means that the coach must bring in a top coordinator to help with the other side of the ball. Tom Herman needs Todd Orlando just like Bob Stoops needed great OCs to help him.

Just as mentioned above, there are programs that just overwhelm the opponent with talent, that was Texas under Mack Brown. Then you have the less talented teams that kill you with execution such as BYU under Lavelle Edwards. Edwards to me is one of the all time best because he could and did beat anyone in the country with a bunch of 2 and 3'star missionaries.

In the end, the proof is in the win column, best coaches are the ones that win.

just off the top of my head
briles was outstanding
urban was a legit coach
saban does
i think harsin x's and o's
muschamp
harbaugh
malzahn
chip kelly
spurrier

so basically, you open yourself up to a lot of criticism if you actually do the x and o part of the job. no wonder head dudes delegate. can't fire the coordinator if you're the coordinator. BUT those dudes seem to win a lot of games

I just can't get on board with Harbaugh being a top notch coach. He did really well at Stanford when he had an all time great QB, but since then he hasn't beat anybody with a pulse.

Well the Miami Hurricanes think that Dan Enos the former QB coach from Bama was a good hire to be their new offensive coordinator/Qb coach
