I was vocally skeptical of him from the beginning. I know a lot of people loved the guy, but to me, he seemed weird af, and all he had done as a head coach was take a ready-to-win situation at Cougar High, and take the next step. I’m not sure we wouldn’t have ended up hiring Tony Levine if they had just kept him on instead of making the change when they did.
Then, there was his introduction to the team. By all reports, he was as bizarre as I feared.
Then he lost to Maryland. Followed by a bunch of frustrating, close losses (except for TCU, who kicked our ass), followed by our bowl game.
Watching him taunt the Missouri QB on the sidelines was the ultimate WTF moment for me. That’s like the bullshit that everyone hated the OU S&C coach for (and I think his dumb bullshit ultimately got him fired too). While no coaches should be doing or encouraging that nonsense, the head coach at Texas should flat out know better. I’m all for having fun with your guys out there, but not at the expense of looking like a ****ing idiot on national TV.
Year two was his best season, but still the same close losses and head-scratching near-misses, another ass-kicking by TCU, and then we nearly pulled a Charlie and lost to Kansas. The Georgia win was nice, but also frustrating, because it was a reminder of how much we underachieved all year.
Year three was more of the same bullshit. More close, frustrating losses, another NCE (Near-Charlie Event) against Kansas. You could argue that nearly losing to KU at home (really should have lost that game) is just as bad as losing to them on the road. But the mark in the win column goes a long way, no matter how it got there. Then another strong bowl performance against a good team to remind us how we should have played all year.
This past year was just more of the same shit, solidifying the obvious conclusion that this guy is not capable of having meaningful success building a program at Texas.
I’m glad we‘ve moved on. Sarkisian is humble, competent, and seems to understand the culture and what it takes to win at a place like Texas. Does he have the charisma? We shall see. But he seems like a good dude, and a competent coach.
Certainly a far cry from this nonsense:
