Gilbert has informed the head coach of Tulsa that he intends to take the UT job.

The potential assistants he will bring with him remain the same: Matt Mattox (OL, Tulsa) and Luke Wells (WRs, Utah State).

I'm sorry but he is bringing the OL coach from Tulsa really? And a wr coach from utah state really?! Are these homerun hires and who are they?

this must have been the third unknown guy that was rumored....
Strong is interviewing Cal offensive coordinator Tony Franklin this morning. Sounds like a weird twist to things

24/7
saying while Strong is interviewing Franklin, he is expected to go with Gilbert.

However, Gilbert has not been offered the job yet

You think if Franklin's hired he'll give us all subscriptions to his system?

Nahlin over at IT is also reporting people at Tulsa are under the impression Gilbert is leaving for the Texas job, and that he believes this as well

Said would be shocked if Gilbert isnt announced.

Please Strong don't screw this up. Go with Gilbert - lots of Texas ties, respected by HS coaches, employs a run first offense rather than a pass happy offense - if he goes with Franklin it will piss off a lot of HS coaches after Gilbert is thinking the job is his.

Not to go off topic or anything else, but ...
Great article in Dallas Morning News today about Todd Dodge. Won 4 state titles in 5 years at Southlake Carroll. Goes to UNT, wins only 6 games in 3+ years. Now he has Austin Westlake in state semis vs. the Evil Empire (Allen). In the article, he says that, in retrospect, he should've been a position coach or coordinator before taking the head job. AND he also says he is happy where he is at, BUT he would not rule out going back to the college level. Sounded like a guy who wanted another crack at the collegiate level. Regardless, an all time great high school coach.

Todd Dodge was a great HS QB back in the day (along with Bill Boy Bryant as his go to receiver). He was unimpressive as a college QB at UT.

Todd Dodge is a great HS coach but was a complete disaster at UNT (6 wins in 4 seasons I think).

See the pattern? He understands the HS game but doesn't translate it well to the next level. Maybe he should have been an OC at a big program before taking the reigns of his own.

Yeah Dodge would of been better off following the Gus Malsahn blue print.
High school.
OC at Arkansas
OC at Tulsa
OC at Aubrun
Then HC

Todd's a fun guy....... a little too much off the field baggage. There are still epic stories floating around Austin about Dodge during college.

Here is what I hope happened that made this thing seem to drag out....

(Gilbert was offered the job....He said I have to do something before I give you an answer.....He hopped in his car and drove to Shane buschell's house and introduced himself. He said son I dont know you and you dont know me, but we are going to talk and find out if either or both of us is going to UT....They trade ideas about what each expects....Shane stays on board and Sterlin calls Charlie and accecpts the job....

At least that is what I hope was going on.....and if he wasnt at Shane's house today, I hope that is where he is going tomorrow!

Or, you know, he went home, talked to his family about it... then talked to his soon-to-be former boss about it... then maybe talked to the players he had been coaching about it... and then said yes? Not that I'm discounting the importance of making sure that we get Beuchele. But there are a million logical reasons why it could have taken a day and a half to get to this point. Before we were all internet junkies, I'd imagine this would have been considered a ridiculously fast hiring process..

No doubt. The meltdowns over the "delay" have been surreal. I no longer pay money to access the cesspool that is the OB premium board, but the unhinged thread titles alone over there will make your jaw drop.

Yeah. First, as I said elsewhere, I'm not sure whether Texas state hiring regulations apply here, but most jobs for the universities and agencies have to be posted to allow other applicants. I know that either the Football Head Coach job or the Athletic Director job had to be, back when Strong and Patterson were hired. And while it doesn't really keep state officials from filling positions with their friends and supporters, the better practices generally involve leaving the job posted for some amount of time at least. So if that applies here, then that probably would mean it would be more than a day from the first rumors of an impending interview popped up.

Second, many of these guys probably DO go at least talk to their family, their former boss, and possibly even the kids they've been coaching for a while, before they want info to leak out.

Third, contracts can be complex. Lawyers and or agents for both sides are probably involved. That is going to take at least a little time.

Fourth, when people started freaking out that we might be interviewing a third candidate.... I mean... I get it, this is a bit different from other job interview processes I suppose? Maybe? But have any of these people who were freaking out ever interviewed for jobs? Did they only interview for jobs where they were already pretty much assured to be the guy and therefor there weren't 3 or more interviewees? Have they never had a job interview where... the company still interviewed another candidate, but it wasn't the last interviewee who got the job?

It was all very confusing why everyone was freaking out... except that, yes, it's easy to get caught up in the internet. If you're sitting there hitting refresh on orangebloods every 5 minutes and checking for newly tweeted rumors all day, I guess maybe the, what, 36 hours...? between the interview and the confirmations that he'd taken the job might actually seem like a really long time? And the funniest part is... you KNOW that Gilbert and Strong knew the answer before the news got out. Again, maybe he just wanted everyone at home and at work to hear it from him before the crazies melting down on the internet posted something first.

24/7 saying Coach Gilbert will not be bringing in Tulsa OL coach Matt Mattox as previously expected.

He will bring in Arizona State OL coach Chris Thomsen or Temple High School head coach Mike Spradlin.

Spradlin worked under Briles at Houston and Gilbert used to be Spradlin's OC at Abilene Cooper.
