Today's Gift (3-10)

This evening we had hoped to bring you Arthur the Human Chameleon, but earlier today, he crawled across a tartan rug, and died of exhaustion.
~~~~~~~~~~~ Ronnie Barker
We've all known people who try to curry favor with others by always being pleasing and agreeable. We probably all do that at times, just "go along to get along," and avoid discord. Nothing wrong with being cooperative, unless it becomes your model for living, all day every day. You do that, and one day you'll look up and realize you don't know who you really are or what you believe in or stand for. Maybe we think we're acceptable only if others approve. If we be who they want us to be, act the way they want us to act, well then we won't be rejected. Until the next person comes along...
That cycle of behavior must end. You've sold your soul, which is the worst deal since the Red Sox sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees. Are we paralyzed by fear of criticism or disagreement? It's ok to disagree, to make a choice that's different from choices that others make. We can say "I don't see it that way," as opposed to "That's stupid, and you're an idiot (or idoit on OB) if you think that."
Our Maker offers us guidance and counseling. He keeps perpetual office hours, and the service is free. He can give us the confidence to stand up for our beliefs, and to stop changing colors to match our environment.
Blessings.
OT- any Navy, Coast Guard or USMC veterans have any “shellback ceremony” stories?
I visited the USS Midway Museum in San Diego a while back and heard a Navy vet working as a guide on the ship talk about the shellback ceremony where sailors that previously crossed the Equator initiate the sailors that haven’t. Those that crossed were called shellbacks. Those that hadn’t were called pollywogs. I believe he said the uninitiated took part in skits on deck, got sprayed with fire hoses and had a physically demanding initiation. I assume that things have changed somewhat based on the Wikipedia article. Anyhow, thanks for serving. I’d love to hear your stories. What y’all got?
Stony Point’s only L on the season was a 5 point loss to Plano East back on December 30. Has the potential to be a great State Championship to end the basketball season.
Saturday Morning Football Nugget (big man related)...
Another player that has opened some eyes this off-season is redshirt freshman left tackle Trevor Goosby.
After arriving at 285 pounds as a freshman, Goosby is now officially listed at 6-7, 313 pounds. The staff really stressed to Goosby in the off-season that he needed to follow the lead of Kelvin Banks in every single category and Goosby did exactly that, In the process, it is believed behind the scenes that Goosby's improvement has been a tide that has lifted multiple boats because there's a sense that Cam Williams might have fed off of Goosby's efforts to some degree, realizing that Goosby might challenge in the quest to be the No.2 tackle on the team.
As things stand, he'll start the spring as the No.2 left tackle behind Banks, but the staff is thrilled with his work in the off-season and are very high on his upside.
Between Goosby and Brandon Baker, the positivity about the young tackles on campus is very high going into the spring.
OT: The strange 1886 Charleston, South Carolina earthquake
The discussion earlier this week about the 60th anniversary of the horrific Anchorage, Alaska earthquake got me thinking about another U.S. earthquake — the one that occurred at Charleston, South Carolina, of all places, in 1886. Unfortunately, severe earthquakes are expected along the West Coast and Alaska, but the southeastern United States? WTH? I first heard about this years ago when, on a visit to Charleston, “earthquake bolts” in a number of older buildings were pointed out to us:
The 1886 Charleston, South Carolina Earthquake
This is the most damaging earthquake to occur in the Southeastern United States and one of the largest historic shocks in Eastern North America. It struck about 9:51 P.M. local time on August 31, and damaged or destroyed many buildings in the old city of Charleston and killed 60 people. Hardly a structure there was undamaged, and only a few escaped serious damage. Property damage was estimated at $5-6 million [equivalent to about $137-165 million in 2020 dollars1]. Structural damage was reported several hundred km from Charleston, including central Alabama, central Ohio, eastern Kentucky, southern Virginia, and western West Virginia, and long-period effects were observed at distances exceeding 1,000 km.
Effects in the epicentral region included about 80 km of severely damaged railroad track and more than 1,300 km2 of extensive cratering and fissuring. Damage to railroad tracks about 6 km northwest of Charleston included lateral and vertical displacement of tracks, formation of S-shaped curves, and longitudinal movement.
The formation of sand craterlets and the ejection of sand was widespread in the epicentral area, but surface faulting was not observed. Many acres (hectares) of ground were covered with sand, and craterlets as much as 6.4 m across were formed. In a few locations, water from the craterlets spouted to heights of about 4.5 to 6 m. Fissures 1 m wide extended parallel to canal and stream banks. A series of wide cracks opened parallel to the Ashley River, and several large trees were uprooted when the bank slid into the river.
* * * *
The intraplate epicenter of this major shock is not unique for large earthquakes in the Eastern and Central United States. Other intraplate earthquakes include those at Cape Ann, Massachusetts (1755), and in the New Madrid, Missouri area (1811-1812). Earthquakes occurring along boundaries of plates (e.g., San Francisco, 1906) are well understood in terms of plate tectonics, but those occurring within plates are not similarly understood. This problem still is being studied more than 100 years after the earthquake.
This earthquake was reported from far distant places such as Boston, Massachusetts; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Chicago, Illinois; Cuba, and Bermuda.
Texas BASEBALL - Saturday Lubbock Loss - Recap
FINAL
Texas: 8-6 (1-1 Big 12) - 2
Texas Tech: 11-3 (1-1 Big 12) - 7
Winning Pitcher: Mac Heuer (2-0)
Losing Pitcher: Cody Howard (2-1)
BOX SCORE
RECAP:
Basic law of gravity. When something goes up, it must come down. After a cold Friday night when the bats were sky high and red hot, they crashed in a big way on Saturday afternoon as freshman Mac Heuer went 6 innings, giving up just 2 runs on 3 hits, walking 1 and striking out 8. The two bullpen pitchers for the Red Raiders pitched 3 innings giving up just two hits and striking out 2. To say it was a poor day at the office offensively, is a bit of an understatement.
When the Horns did get runners on base, it was always with 2 outs.
The Horns started out doing well at the plate against Heuer, driving up the pitch count and then getting an early 1-0 lead after Max Belyeu hit a bomb to LF. Unfortunately, starter Cody Howard could not put up a zero in the Bottom 2nd and immediately gave up a 3 spot to put the Horns down early. That has been a receipe for disaster this season. To their credit, the Horns came back and plated a run in the Top 3rd as Porter Brown muscled an oppo field home run to LF to make it a 3-2 ball game.
In the Bottom 4th, Texas tech struck back getting a 1 out single off of Howard, who then gave up a no doubter to LF, plating two runs and making it a 5-2 ballgame. At that juncture in the game, it still felt like if Texas could get past Heuer and into the Tech bullpen, they could pull off a victory, but instead, Heuer kept plowing along, getting outs and sitting the Texas batters down.
In the Bottom 7th, Max Grubbs, who had a really good outing for the Horns gave up a 1 out double and then walked a batter. He battled back to get a 2nd out, but that is when disaster struck at the catching position. Kimble Schuessler could not hold onto a ball and it got away from him, moving the runners to 2B and 3B. A hard grounder to Jalin Flores at SS, who had the ball careen off his glove as he went for the back hand to try and make a play ended up in shallow LF with two Red Raiders runners scoring to make it 7-2. It was at that point, the ball game felt like it was over because the Horns still could not muster anything offensively. This was highlighted by Jared Thomas’s 0-5 day at the office where he had 4 strikeouts. GOLDEN SOMBRERO!
At the end of the day, Teas could only must 2 runs on 5 hits and had 2 errors, leaving 9 men on base. Texas Tech scored 7 runs on 13 hits, committing 3 errors and leaving 10 men on base. In reality, the Horns loss could have been much worse and probably should have been.
BIG MOMENT:
The big moment for me was the momentum crushing Bottom 7th when the Horns allowed two runs to score to give the Red Raiders a 5 run lead. Through 14 games this season, the catching and fielding errors have been far too costly.
INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE:
RHP Max Grubbs had to come into the game early for the Horns and for the 2nd straight day, a reliever went longer than the starter did. That is a recipe for disaster, but Grubbs battled through, scattering 5 hits through 4 1/3 innings pitched, giving up 2 runs, neither earned, and only walking 1 batter. Tip of the hat young man. Grubbs gave the Horns the same type of performance that LHP Ace Whitehead did yesterday, helping keep them in the game.
TAKEAWAYS:
Starting pitching simply cannot go 3 or 4 innings. They have to give the Horns 5 innings every single game. This pitching staff does not have enough quality arms out of the bullpen to sustain that kind of heavy utilization. While I feel for him and the situation that he is in as an iron man, Kimble Schuessler has to protect the plate better and not continue to give up free bases. At the same time, the Texas pitchers have to locate better and stop putting Kimble in a precarious position.
I mentioned it in the weekend series preview, but right now, the Horns pitching staff is simply not missing bats. It is fine to play to contact, but your defense MUST be perfect in every aspect. I don’t know that there is a magical cure for this staff, but being able to generate swings and misses is paramount. More importantly though is to get the first pitch over the plate every time. Lebarron Johnson Jr, Cody Howard, and Charlie Hurley have struggled, but in some large part it is because of their inability to throw strike one, meaning they are consistently on the back foot against hitters.
The weekend is not over thankfully and the Horns still have the opportunity to win the series tomorrow. They will start Charlie Hurley, but have Tanner Witt, Grant Fontenot, Gage Boehm, and others fresh in the pen, so it is in a good spot.
NEXT UP:
The Longhorns and Red Raiders will face either other tomorrow at 2pm in a rubber match series decider.
Crawfish recs in San Antonio
Looking for some good crawfish recs in San Antonio. My birthday is this week and my personal annual tradition is a crawfish dinner with my family on my birthday, but we haven't had a ton of crawfish since moving to SA so I need some help.
We had BB’s Tex Orleans a couple times last year and it was ok, but looking for something a little better if possible. We’re in the Northwest San Antonio area near Helotes but willing to drive a bit for a good spot.
TIA!
Edit to add: I’m a big fan of the “Viet-Cajun” style that you find in Austin a lot, but love traditional Louisiana style as well, so don’t hold back any recs.
