Texas BASEBALL - Friday Night Falter at Minute Maid Park

FINAL
Texas - 3
LSU - 6

Winning Pitcher: Luke Holman (2-0)
Losing Pitcher: Lebarron Johnson Jr (1-1)
BOX SCORE

RECAP
In front of 24,927 fans at Minute Maid Park, the Longhorns ran into a Luke Holman buzzsaw. The 24,927 fans in attendance represents the 7th largest regular season baseball game.

Both Lebarron Johnson Jr and Luke Holman had a rough 1st inning with regards to pitch count. Unfortunately for the Horns, LSU batters laid off of LBJ’s slider and combined with a lack of command with his fastball outside, hung in at the plate and drove up the pitch count. LBJ made it just 3 innings, throwing 91 pitches, scattering 4 hits, walking 3, striking out 6, and giving up 2 earned runs. Holman on the other hand bounced back after a tough first inning to pitch 5 2/3 innings giving up 3 hits (all to Peyton Powell), issuing just 1 walk, and striking out 12. Holman utilized a really effective fastball / slider combo to devastating effect.

Tanner Witt came in relief of LBJ and inherited runners on the base paths. Witt did himself no favors by walking another batter and giving up a 2 run RBI single. While Witt was not exactly sharp, he did look much better in his 2 innings pitched and can use the outing as something to build off of. Easton Tumis looked great in his first inning, but then ran into trouble as the LSU batters began to hone in on his fastball/slider combo and was eventually chased, leaving runners on the base paths for Grant Fontenot. The Louisiana native was not as sharp as he has been in other outings and ended up giving the big 3 run home run to Jared Jones that was crushed to RF. That HR made it 6-0 Tigers, which felt like an insurmountable lead based on the fact that the Horns ended up striking out 20 times throughout the course of the ballgame.

The Horns did get a run back in the Bottom 6th when Kimble Schuessler uncorked a line drive to LF for a lead off solo shot. Unfortunately, as with the rest of the night, the Horns could not get base runners home and they went into the Bottom of the 9th with just a single run.

In the Bottom 9th, the Horns got a pair of runs back to make it 6-3 Tigers when freshman Casey Borba scorched a pitch to the wall in left CF for a 2 run RBI double. Unfortunately, the next batter up, freshman Dee Kennedy struck out looking, a fitting end to the game for a team who had struggled mightily with the slider all night long.

BIG MOMENT
Gotta hand it to the freshman DH Casey Borba who came up to bat in the Bottom of the 9th having batted 0-3 on the night, and ended up coming up clutch. He absolutely mashed a fastball to the gap in left CF for a 2 run RBI double. That hit ended up going 409 feet and brought the Horns to within 3 runs of the Tigers. Not bad freshman, not bad at all.

INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE
Sounds like a broken record, but once again Peyton Powell with the big night at the plate going 3-4 with two doubles and a single on the night. Powell was also the only batter to get a hit off of starter Luke Holman.

TAKEAWAYS
Where to start. First off, the sky is not falling, the program is not in shambles, and the sun will shine again. The Horns went up against a very talented LSU team and lost. Was it ugly offensively, absolutely, no one can state it wasn’t. The Horns struck out 20 times on the night and earned just 1 walk. This is also a very teachable moment for Coach Pierce and the Horns. This reminded me of the 2021 season when the Horns had an extremely hard time hitting the curveball, except in 2024, it is the slider. It felt like the Horns were guessing and pressing at the plate all night long.

While not perfect or even pretty at times, I thought Witt had an outing that he can build upon and try to continue to make progress. For Tumis, he did great until he ran into the man known as Tommy Tanks. At this level, you cannot miss your spot. He did and He paid for it. At the same time, Hudson Hamilton can take plenty from his performance, especially getting two quick outs and starting to nibble instead of being in attack mode like he was at the onset.

Defensively and offensively, it was a night to flush for sophomore Jared Thomas. At the plate he went 0-4, trying at times to be aggressive early in counts and later trying to lay off and take a relaxed approach. Either way, nothing was working and it showed. Defensively, the inability to catch the ball in foul territory and the grounder that ate him up just highlight that it was a really tough night.

Lastly, while he is everyone’s scapegoat at the moment, I think Coach Pierce is or quickly will be at a cross roads where he will have to put Dee Kennedy in the lineup and sacrifice Jack O’Dowd until he can get right. While having Kennedy in the lineup puts another freshman into an already young lineup, Kennedy has been better in the field and put together better at-bats than Jack has this season.

188 years ago, on the 2nd of March, 1836, Texas formally declared its independence from Mexico. The Texas Declaration of Independence was signed at Washington-on-the-Brazos, now commonly referred to as the “birthplace of Texas.” Similar to the United States Declaration of Independence, this document focused on the rights of citizens to “life” and “liberty” but with an emphasis on the “property of the citizen.”

The Texas Declaration of Independence was issued during a revolution against the Santa Anna, who had illegally set himself up as dictator and the Mexican government (referred to as the Central Government who opposed the rights of the citizens favored by those who identified as the Federalists) that began on 2 October 1835 at Gonzales Texas (Come and Take it) following a series of government edicts including the dissolution of state legislatures, disarmament of state militias, and the most aggrievous, the abolition of the Constitution of 1824 which stripped all citizens of Mexico of their rights. Texas was not the only state of Mexico that rebelled against the tyranny of Santa Anna and the rebellions were brutally squashed. Even Santa Anna’s home state of Vera Cruz rose up against the overreach.

In the 1800s, owning property for farming or ranching was critical for most to build and create any personal wealth. Why migrating to Texas and it’s rich lands was so popular. Not only did Santa Anna strip all citizens of their rights, he also threatened to revoke all land grants and threatened to seize the property.

By December 1835, Texians (Anglo-American settlers) and Tejanos (Mexican citizens who had settled in Texas) captured the town of San Antonio and the garrison at the Alamo. Two months later, on February 23, 1836, Mexican troops under General Antonio López de Santa Anna arrived in San Antonio to retake the city. In doing so, the Siege of the Alamo began. Although Sam Houston ordered Texans to abandon San Antonio, a group of rebels decided to defend the town and make their stand at an abandoned Spanish mission, the Alamo. VICTORY OR DEATH (from Travis’ famous letter from the Alamo)

59 delegates from across the state were elected and came to Washington-on-the-Brazos. The ranged from Pro-Independence delegates as well as Pro-Federalist (restore the Constitution of 1824, Texas to become a separate state under Mexican rule). They included Tejanos Lorenzo de Zavala and Jose Antonio Navarro (Navarro and delegate Jose Fransico Ruiz were both born in Texas) as well as notables like Thomas Jefferson Rusk and Sam Houston. The Convention of 1836 was called to order on 1 March

Officers of the Convention

David G Burnet, President

Lorenzo de Zavala, Vice President

Samuel P. Carson, Secretary of State

Thomas J Rusk, Secretary of War

Bailey Hardeman, Secretary of Treasury

David Thomas, Attorney General

Sam Houston, Commander in Chief Texas Army

On the 2nd of March, the Declaration of Independence, authored by George Childress was voted and the Republic of Texas was officially born.

Long live the Republic.

As a proud Son of the Texas Republic, 6th and 7th Generation Texan, our unique history is important. Texas is different. Neither South nor Southwest. The great author John Steinbeck’s quote about Texas says it best:

WBB: #3 Texas vs BYU, Saturday, 7:00 (LHN) - Senior Night and $10K for 10K Challenge

The Longhorns (26-4, 13-4) and Cougars (16-14, 6-11) will take the court Saturday in the last Big12 conference game to be played at the Moody.

Vic as well as the Texas AD preview specifically mentioned Shaylee and Hadi as the Seniors who will be honored after the game even though there are 3 other seniors on the roster (Shay, Taylor and Deyona).
  • Shaylee is out of eligibility after 4 years (played 3 seasons) at BYU and 2 years at Texas. She left BYU as the #10 scorer in program history.
  • Hadi returned from an "undisclosed illness" Wednesday night after missing a month.
Texas is 5-1 against BYU in program history. To get to 6-1, the Longhorns need to keep 6' 1" senior forward Lauren Gustin in check. Gustin is 5th in the Big12 in scoring (17.4) and the conference's leading rebounder (15.2) - 1 of 2 players averaging a double-double in conference play. She accounts for 27.3% of their scoring and 40.3% of their rebounds.

The Cougars have had a rough go 'round their first season in the Big 12 but did get a 12-point win over #18 Baylor and lost a nail-biter to then #4 KSU, 67-65. Their biggest issue has been turnovers, especially the differential: -51 in 17 games.

$10K for 10K: Texas head coach Vic Schaefer has pledged to donate $10,000 to the Neighborhood Longhorns Program if 10,000 fans show up to Moody Center for the game on Saturday. Last year through their 10K for 10K game Texas helped raise over $150,000 for the Neighborhood Longhorns Program.

Biden’s humanitarian disaster . . .

“NEW: Arizona rancher John Ladd has found 17 dead bodies on his land which spans 10.5 miles along the U.S. southern border.

Where are all of the crocodile tears from @AOC and the Democrats?

Unfortunately, it gets worse. Ladd has a "r*pe tree" on his property where 'guides' r*pe "almost all the women" who cross the border.

The r*pe trees have women's clothes on them which violent gangs use as symbolic "trophies."

Despite Democrats' claims that "walls don't work," the illegals shockingly use the portion of Ladd's land *without* border wall to cross over. 6.5 miles of the 10.5 miles has a border wall.

Ladd carries a Glock at all times in case he ever needs to defend his life.

"I'm in favor of having American citizens and private property owners have more control over their destiny. That's the bottom line," Ladd said.”

W. C. Clarke the Godfather of Austin Blues has passed.

Man if you know Austin music then you know W.C. Clarke. Born and bred in Austin he has played with all the greats. Here is probably my favorite W.C. Clarke video that I have taken over the years. It was in 2016 at Antones and it is just him noodling around during a sound check. Greatness.
