Coin Collectors

Do we have any resident coin collectors on the board? I have a question about a purchase i made after way too many adult beverages last night.

Long story short, i bought a roll of 20 uncirculated Morgan silver dollars for $1100. Also, for a little more context, i may have made 12 purchases of similar items for a total of 12k. Just want to know how fkd i am. Also, i have yet to tell the wife (from Nam) about this… who just gave birth to our third child (first boy!) 3 weeks ago. Any chance i can recover from this?

AMA and TIA!

Texas BASEBALL v. Cal Poly - Saturday Game Thread

Login to view embedded media

Beautiful weather in late February, Texas Baseball at the Disch, and for some a cold beverage. Does not get much better than that! The Horns take on Cal Poly Mustangs today looking to win the series. After a commanding performance by Lebarron Johnson Jr last night (8 IP, 2 H, 8 K, 0 R), the Horns turn to RHP Charlie Hurley to lead the line. Offensively, the Horns will look to bounce back after a fairly quiet night at the plate, in large part due to an outstanding performance by LHP Jakob Wright. The good news is that the Horns continue to get offensive production from sophomore Jared Thomas (4 multi hit games in the first 5 games of the season), Peyton Powell, and from the bottom of the lineup. The addition of freshman Dee Kennedy to the lineup has been massively beneficial because it brings so much speed, which pressures opposing pitchers to try and keep him off the base paths. Add in the speed of Will Gasparino and Jayden Duplantier and the two offensive leaders (Thomas & Powell) are loving the current lineup. Today, the Horns need Hurley to give them 5 solid innings and then turn it over to the bullpen which is rested and fresh and ready to rock. Offensively, the Horns will have to show maturity and patience at the plate against a pitcher who had 12 strikeouts in his first start of the season against Missouri.

OT: Who here has worked a manual labor type job?

I worked several years at a job that had me doing very physical work outside in the Texas heat. Kicked my ass every single day but I’m so glad that I had that experience. Not many things that are more humbling than that imo haha

I’m sure we’ve got several on the board who have worked, or still work, in industries that require them to bust their ass on a daily basis so I’m interested to hear from y'all. There’s certainly money to be made depending on the industry, but it’s HARD work and not everyone is cut out for it. Whatcha got OB?

Texas BASKETBALL Scouting Report: Kansas Jayhawks (This team is BIG)

As my coach used to say, KNOW YOUR PERSONNEL!

Kansas Scouting Report

Starting 5

#24 KJ Adams Jr. (Jr)
Forward
6’7, 225lbs

33.6 MPG, 8.3 FGA, .609 FG%, .1 3PA, 0 3P%, .602 FT%, 1.5 ORB, 3.0 DRB, 4.5 TRB, 3.3 AST, 12.2 PPG

KJ Adams operates primarily from 15ft in, and is a very effective player in doing so. He has a great floater game. He’s a very athletic tweener who is big and physical, and is the definition of a garbage man in basketball terms. He plays extremely hard with a ton of energy. Texas needs to force him to go left when he catches ball on the block or at the elbow. If he does, he will almost always spin back to his left shoulder. BOX OUT.

#1 Hunter Dickinson (Sr)
Center
7’1, 255lbs

32.3 MPG, 13.9 FGA, .558 FG%, 2.1 3PA , .33% 3P%, .703, 2.6, 8.4, 11, 2.2, 18.2

Hunter Dickinson is a player that can score all over the floor. The big lefty has been doing his thing in the college basketball world since his Michigan days, and is going to be a load. I’m looking forward to the Dylan Disu match up. He has great footwork in the post, but struggles getting back to his right hand. These eyes tell me he’s a poor pick and roll defender and Texas in high pick and roll situations should feast, especially if they switch on ball screens. If Shedrick is healthy, look for more of him this game if Disu struggles to defend him inside, or keeping him off the boards.

#10 Johnny Furphy (Fr)
Guard
6’9, 202lbs

22.0 MPG, 5.8 FGA, .517 FG%, 2.1 3PA, .37 3P%, 735 FT%, 1.2 ORB, 3.2 DRB, 4.4 TRB, 0.8 AST, 8.9 PPG

Shooter. Shooter. Shooter. Johnny Furphy is a do it all player and while young, this kid has the opportunity to fill it up, and seems like a player that Texas always struggles to defend. You cannot lose him as he does an awesome job in finding open shots in transition. Just because he’s a good shooter, make no mistake that he can absolutely put the ball on the floor. That all being said, like Dickinson he struggles defensively. Texas will play what we like to call “footsteps” meaning you go over every ball screen, and your feet are where his feet are. Think about it like stepping in someone’s footprints in the snow. Everywhere he goes, you’re on his ass.

#3 Dajuan Harris (Sr)
Guard
6’1, 160lbs

35.9 MPG, 7.0 FGA, .421 FG%, 2.3 3PA, .417 3P%, .789 FT%, 0.2 ORB, 1.7 DRB, 1.9. TRB, 6.5 AST, 8.0 PPG

It feels like Dajuan Harris has been at Kansas for 10 years. The fifth year senior is Bill Self’s do-it-all floor general. He can knock down open shots and get to the rim, but he’s very much a pass first player. If I’m Texas, I have Tyrese Hunter/Chendall Weaver guarding him all game. They are the best on-ball defenders on the team, and you have to keep him in front or he will punish you.

#15 Kevin McCullar
Guard
6'6, 205 LBS

35.4 MPG, 13.6 FGA, .463 FG%, .46 3P%, .793 FT %, 0.8 ORB, 5.7 DRB, 6.4 TRB, 4.4 AST, 19.0 PPG

Kevin McCullar is the do it everything transfer from Texas Tech. The fifth year senior is monster, that really does everything well. He's going to get his, he's going to score, and you have to do your best to simply contain him. There isn't anything specific or special that Rodney Terry draws up to neutralize him here, it's simply a do your best kind of game.

-------------

Summary:

The combination of these 5, averages 66 points per game. Typically I’d do more of an in depth analysis on any contributors coming off the bench, but this is going to be the focal point of everything Kansas has offensively. This is a BIG line up, so Texas needs to spread them out, and KNOCK. DOWN. SHOTS. If this game is anything like the game against Kansas State, the horns will be in trouble. Dylan Disu should theoretically eat Dickinson’s lunch on the offensive end of the floor, but how will he hold up against Dickinson’s size on defense? You hope to God Texas will hedge every ball screen (unless on Furphy), and you allow help defense to do its job. Whatever you do, you cannot let Dajuan Harris to get dribble penetration at will. Let me know if you guys enjoy this type of content and I'll do more of a deep dive into the analytics etc.

Thanks for reading!

R.I.P. Golden Richards

Golden Richards, the former Dallas Cowboys receiver known for his flowing blond hair who famously caught a touchdown pass off a gadget play in the 1978 Super Bowl, died Friday of congestive heart failure at his home in Murray. He was 73. The former BYU star spent seven seasons in the NFL with Dallas, Chicago and Denver, and is best known for his five-plus seasons as a deep-play threat with the Cowboys. He twice averaged more than 21 yards per catch, finishing his time in Dallas with an 18.3 career mark. Richards finished his career with 122 receptions for 2,136 yards and 17 TDs before injuries prompted him to retire in 1980.

WBB: #5 Texas @ UCF, Saturday: Good defensive effort, Horns win 87-56

The Longhorns (25-3, 12-3) should be looking to bounce back from an underwhelming victory over Texas Tech when they take the court Saturday in Orlando against the Big12 cellar-dwelling UCF Knights (12-13, 3-12). This will be the first meeting between the 2 programs. UCF's record may not impress but they are not a team to take lightly. The Knights have given legitimate scares to other ranked teams (74-77 loss to Baylor, 58-60 loss to KSU) and even notched a good win against Iowa State.

Coaching Staff Connections:
  • UCF HC Sytia Messer is in her 2nd season at the helm. She is very familiar with Texas WBB, an assistant coach under Skeletor from 2013-2022 at Baylor and then a season at LSU. She was also a college teammate of current Texas DBO Christy Smith when they made the Final 4 together at Arkansas in 1998. The pair made that run under a demanding, young-ish Associate Head Coach, Vic Schaefer.
  • Another familiar face on the UCF bench will be former longtime WVU head coach Mike Carey. Carey's Mountaineers played a style of basketball more akin to rugby than hoops and gave the Longhorns all they could handle over years.
UCF Starters:
  • Kaitlin Peterson: 5' 9" Guard - Knights' leading scorer at 20.3 ppg is a volume scorer (435 FGA - no Longhorn has more than 342) and also has twice as many steals (55) and FTA (155) as anyone else on the UCF roster.
  • Laila Jewett: 5' 10" Guard - Their most consistent shooter from distance (34/83, 41.0%), leads the team in assists (3.4/game) - 8.5 ppg
  • Mya Burns: 6' Guard - 2nd leading scorer (10.6 ppg), leads the team in blocks (16) and has a tendency to get into foul trouble.
  • Morgan Robinson-Nwagwu: 5' 8" Guard - recently took over a starting role, 10 starts in 25 games this season
  • Khyala Ngodu: 6' 3" Center -like Robinson-Nwagwu, has started 11 of 25 games
UCF Team Notes:
  • Of the 13 players on the roster, 9 of them began their college careers at a school other than UCF.
  • The Knights have 2 players at 6' 3" and another 2 at 6' 2", Texas has the size advantage in the paint.
  • UCF does not take care of the ball, averaging 18.5 turnovers per game, to only 11.5 assists
    • Without Rori, the Longhorns give it away 15.4 and record 13.5 assists (12.4 TO and 20.7 assists with Rori at PG)
Another game against a 4-out/1-in lineup. Texas should win the battle in the paint on both ends and will need to play good help defense when UCF tries to spread them out to either shoot from outside or drive to the bucket.

Vic was very angry after the W over Tech in his press conference and I felt a bit bad for Taylor and Amina who were with him in the post game press conference. Those 2 actually played well and with effort not shown by some of their teammates. Vic seemed to cool off between then and his press availability the next day.

Dennis Hoppers ‘Crazy Ref’ Football Commercials…

@AndrewfromUTLaw2 - Andrews thread on Eric Metcalf got me thinking about the Dennis Hopper commercials he did back in the mid 90’s, and specifically the Barry Sanders all-time classic – Reminded me a lot of Metcalf & Bijan and their beautiful moves on the football field. (Link to many of them below)

If you didn’t open that thread, here’s the Barry commercial:

We like someone because, we love someone although.
~~~~~~~~~~~ Henry de Montherlant
Eight words, and I had to read them several times before I understood. Ol' Henry speaks, of course, about what we call "conditional love," perhaps the world's greatest oxymoron. Too many of us grew up in homes where that version of love was a common practice, so we learned to take that on the road and do the same in our adult relationships. It's never too late to learn a new way to live and love...to love with all our heart, unconditionally. We should probably start with ourselves. No, we should definitely start with ourselves.
Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 1 Cor 13:7.
Happy Saturday my friends.
"Editor's" Note: It's been about 100 days since I started trying to emulate DippyDawg here at TG. I've gone back and read most of them, looking for ways to improve. One thing that stuck out was that I seem to be pretty long-winded; the TG is often TL;DR by OB standards. I'll try to be more succinct in the future. If any of you have other feedback, let me know.
Will AI initially replace outsourced jobs?
Maybe it already it, I don't know. I know next to nothing about AI outside of making obsene pictures on Microsoft Bing Image Creator and asking ChatGPT to make rap lyrics for me.
Was asked to help on this AI initiative at my work, and all the functionalities they were interested in it doing were primarily stuff that is currently offshored. I can't help but think this is the next iterative. Jobs that were done here first were moved offshore to save money, and now those jobs can be done by a computer to save even more money.
Texas BASEBALL - LBJ wrangles the Mustangs - Game Recap
FINAL
Texas - 2
Cal Poly - 0
Winning Pitcher: Lebarron Johnson Jr (1-0)
Losing Pitcher: Jakob Wright (1-1)
BOX SCORE
RECAP
In front a solid crowd on a beautiful night at Disch-Falk Field, Lebarron Johnson Jr went 8 innings without giving up a run and outside of a few errant base runners due to walks, was on cruise control. After the game, Coach Pierce said that LBJ’s fastball command was outstanding and that he mixed in enough sliders to keep them honest. Pierce added that the biggest thing about tonight was game management, which he thought LBJ did an outstanding job of. LBJ benefitted from some outstanding defensive plays by freshman Dee Kennedy at 2B, sophomore Jalin Flores at SS, and veteran leader Peyton Powell at 3B. Offensively, the Horns were stymied by a great performance by Cal Poly starting pitcher LHP Jakob Wright, but did enough to get LBJ the run support he needed. Closing out the game, RHP Gage Boehm did an outstanding job against lefty Joe Yorke and closed out the game to earn his first save as a Longhorn. After the game, Coach Pierce praised Boehm for his demeanor and attacking mindset.
BIG MOMENT
In the Bottom of the 5th inning, Dee Kennedy worked his 2nd walk of the game in an outstanding at-bat, as the freshman showed real maturity at the plate. A balk moved Kennedy over to 2B and then a wild pitch put Kennedy on 3B, allowing lead off hitter Jared Thomas to drive him in when he hit a soft grounder to the left side.
INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE
There is no doubt who was the star tonight. Lebarron Johnson Jr. After going just 5 innings in his first start of the season, LBJ bounced back by going 8 scoreless innings, racking up 8 strikeouts. His maturity on the mound and ability to stay calm when there were base runners is just one of the reasons why he is so highly thought of inside and outside of the program.
TAKEAWAYS
While not a huge offensive night for the Horns, this is exactly the kind of performance that the team needs early in the season. Grinding out at-bats, working counts, LBJ going deep in the game and showing off his game management, outstanding defensive plays from the middle infield, and a closer that despite giving up a hit to a future MLB Draft pick, not getting rattled and slamming the door for the win.
