CNBC just did a story about the Stanford ponzi scheme in Houston that got busted a few months after Madoff

It has been 15 years and investors still haven't recovered much of their money.

Curious if anyone lost money there or worked for Stanford?

I actually interviewed there at one point. I do remember going on Glassdoor at the time and lots of people said Stanford was super eccentric and very weird.

OT: Allen Bard

Allen Bard died . I was a chemistry major, knew of him, had a class with him, and became good friends with two of his grad students. They went on to highly successful careers as academic chemists, and remained very close to Dr. Bard. He was a towering intellect and a good and generous person. He will be missed. What a legacy.

Today's Gift (2-15)

When the whole world is running toward a cliff, he who is running in the opposite direction appears to have lost his mind.
~~~~~~~~~~~ C. S. Lewis
Somewhere around 7th or 8th grade, we lost all desire to be different. Fitting in was our refuge from the giant chemical attack we call puberty. Being different was equal parts courage and stupidity. What about now? Is it still safer to blend in? Or have we finally figured out that by trusting ourselves and our Maker---daring to be different---we discover that new and better ideas don't emerge from conformity?
We ought not spend our lives doing only what others do. That's what leads to the time-honored tradition of every parent asking "Well, if all your friends were going to jump off a cliff...." We contribute more in our families, our friendships, at work, by offering new perspectives, different ideas. There are also times when we must take a stand, those times when our gut instinct (our viscera, if you want to be all uppity) tells us that what the crowd is doing is wrong.
What new idea have I bottled up that can make the world around me better?
PS I swear to God if any of you uses the expression "thinking outside the box" I'll have you banned. As your mom said, "Just try me."
Blessings and love to you.
Texas BASEBALL: Big 12 Championship Schedule is Set
Well, leave it up to the Big 12 to make the Championship Tourney to be convoluted.
The top two seeds will have a first bye, which is no surprise, but instead of providing them a double bye, the Big 12 has instead decided to give the two highest seeded teams to win a day off as part of the double elimination format.
Kazakhstan U lets slip some personal info
I don't know whether to believe this or not.
From the article:
A university collected and – then leaked – the ‘virginity status’ of 190 female students.
A scandal has engulfed the Al-Farabi National University in Almaty, Kazakhstan, as the confidential data was published on WhatsApp.
This includes their names, ages, phone numbers and even tax codes of the victims.
How does magneto stop bullets? Most bullets are not ferromagnetic. Often they’re lead with copper jackets or something like that.
Furthermore, he has magnet powers, not super Jedi reflex powers. Bullets are fast. Some sniper could just pick this dude off from 1000 yards away and he’d never know what hit him.
The whole thing is bullshit and it is hard to take seriously because of this inconsistency.
