Positive Myron Charles update

Got a text from Myron Charles that he's now heading to Austin this weekend. That had always been a possibility but then there was talk of a Florida visit looking more likely early this week. Things have again turned, and Charles tells me he'll now be in Austin for the game against Kentucky.

Charles actually has a game tonight and then I'm assuming we'll catch an early flight tomorrow morning. Big development here.

School BB Team Tryouts? Points -> Bias

My daughter is a soccer player who tried out and made her school's B Team basketball team last year and again this year. Before last season, my daughter had never played a competitive game. She is playing for fun until club soccer starts up again in the Spring.

Last Year: about midway through the season, a girl joined the B team after getting demoted from the A team. She may not have been the worst player on the B team, but she would have been my pick. I asked my daughter how the girl could possibly have made the A team. She told me the coaches used a point system to determine who made the team. I let it go.

Last night: My daughter's team played for the first time this season. The girl was missing and I figure she hadn't made the team. Later, I saw the girl sitting with the A Team. When I asked my daughter about it, she said the girl racked up points shooting free throws and uncontested shots. As a result, she made the A team again. There are at least four players on the B Team who are significantly better than the girl who made the A Team.

My daughter said the points system was used to "eliminate bias." WTF!

Aren't BB coaches supposed to pick the best players?

I am curious, are other school systems using similar "points systems" to pick players?

Hoops Preview: Horns looking to win first hoops title in the SEC on Friday night

Cliffsnotes: The Texas men's basketball team has a chance to add its first trophy as a member of the SEC when it competes in the championship game of the extremely prestigious UGK...er... UKG Legends Classic on Friday night against Saint Joseph's at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Time: 8:30 PM Central.

How to Watch: ESPNU - Kevin Brown (play by play) and Jay Williams (analyst)

Line: Texas -7.5

KenPom Rankings: Texas (No.27) and Saint Joseph's (No.90)

How We Got Here: Texas (4-1) took out Syracuse on Thursday night in one semi-final, while St. Joseph's (4-1) eliminated an obviously terrified-to-face-Texas version of Texas Tech in the other semi-final.

The Texas Line-up...

The Headliner: Freshman Tre Johnson shook off a cold night from the floor on offense in the final 4 minutes against Syracuse to help the Longhorns secure a win., Johnson finished with a season low 16 points and hasn't cracked 20 points in any of the last 3 games, although he is still averaging 22.0 points per game. In you're wondering he's 2 points off the points-pace that Kevin Durant (112 points in 5 games) established as a freshman in 2006-07.

Did You Know: The last time the Longhorns played Saint Joseph's was on November 24th, 2008, as the Longhorns rolled to a 68-50 win in the Maui Invitational. A.J. Abrams led the team in scoring that night with 17 points, while Gary Johnson scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds off the bench.

About Saint Jospeh's: The Hawks have been a fascinating team this season, as they hold wins over Texas Tech (No.19 in the latest Kenpom rankings) and Villanova (No.61 in the latest Kenpom rankings), but also have a loss to Central Connecticut (No.271 in the latest Kenpom rankings). 6-2 sophomore guard Xzayvier Brown is the straw that stirs the drink for the Hawks, as he's averaging 17.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 2.0 steals per game. He's more of a volume shooter than an efficient scorer, but you do NOT want to send him to the free throw line (95.0% for the season). He's joined in the backcourt by 6-2 senior guard Erik Reynolds, who averages 16.8 points per game and scored 26 points (6 of 11 from downtown) against Texas Tech last night. The Hawks knocked. down 12 of 22 (54.5%) from three-point land against Tech and they shoot better than 36% from downtown on the season. Where the Hawks can be exposed is in the paint, as evidenced last night when Tech out-rebounded them 44-28. The starting line-up for the Hawks goes 6-2, 6-2, 6-3, 6-9 and 6-9.

Texas basketball 2024-2025

Our boys kick off the season tonight against Ohio State in the Hall of Fame tournament. National broadcast TV on TNT at 9pm.

Keep an eye on Tre Johnson. He’s our 5 star stud guard who is supposed to be a supreme scorer. He’s projected to be a lottery pick in next year’s NBA draft. I’m curious to see how he plays to see if he lives up to the hype. He’s pretty much our only HS recruit. Everyone else are transfers.

OT: Katt Williams Buys Former Alabama Military Base to Launch Movie Studio

I found this interesting since my grandparents on my Dad's side lived in Anniston, Alabama where Ft. McClellan was located and we spent a lot of time there over the years.

Katt Williams’ dreams of being a movie mogul have taken him to Alabama, where the comedian purchased a former military base with the intention to launch a movie studio.

“I can’t disclose the amount or exact location just yet, but I can confirm that he has purchased a former military base in Alabama,” Williams’ publicist, Amy Sisoyev, said in an email Thursday to AL.com.

While the comedian is mum on the property he purchased, Fort McClellan’s Cold War-era barracks in Anniston had been up for sale at a $1.5 million asking price.

Starships

An old Cold War barracks, known locally as Starships, is on the market in Anniston, Ala. (Alabama Film Office)

Known locally as “Starships,” the barracks and surrounding property consists of 30 concrete buildings with three million square feet of indoor space. There are 10 barracks with 20 rooms each, two large gymnasiums, and more than 90 acres of usable flat land on the old Ft. McClellan site.

Connie Alexander, designated broker at the Luxe Group, which represented the seller of the Fort McClellan barracks, said the property “was purchased through an LLC but Katt Williams did visit the property frequently during the purchase phase.”

“It’s a visionary endeavor, and we’re excited to see how this historic site evolves under his leadership,” Alexander said.

Efforts to reach the McClellan Development Authority -- a non-profit public corporation made to speed economic development of the former fort -- was unsuccessful.

In an interview published by GQ on Wednesday, Williams said he purchased a former Alabama military base sometime this year.

The comedian’s January appearance on Shannon Sharpe’s podcast “Club Shay Shay” holds the YouTube interview record with more than 83 million views. Williams put several entertainers, including Kevin Hart, Rickey Smiley and Tyler Perry, on blast.

In the GQ interview, Williams told GQ he has ambitions of becoming a movie mogul à la Perry.

“It’s just not fair to put all that pressure on Tyler Perry,” he said. “He can only do so much.”

Williams was in Alabama earlier this year for stops on his ‘Dark Matter’ tour, where he performed sets in Huntsville, Birmingham and Mobile.

OT: What’s with the hype around Trader Joe’s?

I just don’t get it. Women in particular love that place and I just don’t understand why. Wife from Nam tasked me with running in there after work to buy stuff for dinner (literally everything I bought could easily be found at HEB) and I left the store annoyed, hungry, and spiteful.

The store is tiny, it’s absolutely packed anytime I’ve gone in no matter the time of day, selection sucks, produce looks okay at best, I almost bought a turkey while I was there just to get it out of the way but it was $35 for a 13lb bird. The same sized bird is going for $10 at HEB right now… I mean wtf does that place have going for it?? I guess aside from the turkey the prices on everything else are pretty good but why not just go to HEB if that’s what’s most important? The next time I find myself in a Trader Joe’s will be too soon. Rant over😤

Some thoughts on the Rivals 2021 top 100 (long read)

It is fun to look back at the Rivals 2021 top 100 and remember what we thought then.

Of course the top player is Quinn Ewers, lost to Ohio State forever. What a loss. Oops, I guess he starts for Texas now.

Looking from today, you see how the list is dominated by Alabama and Ohio State. The recent successes of Georgia and Oregon were just beginning to be seen. Georgia only has only two top 50 recruits and one of those is ... wait for it ... Brock Vandagriff at #8. Guess who is starting for Kentucky against Texas tomorrow. Amarious Mims #5 was a first rounder at Georgia.

Alabama dominates the list with 17 in the top 100, 5 in the top 30. Of course Keanu Koht at #43 just got kicked off for perving on Coach DeBoer's daughter. Jo Jo Earle at #42 is on the TCU roster. Camar Wheaton at #29 is on SMU's roster. Agiye Hall #72 came to Texas, left and was arrested this summer for drugs. Christian Leary # 58 left for Georgia Tech. Ja'Corey Brooks #37 left for Louisville. Tommy Brockermeyer #9 to TCU.

That doesn't mean Alabama missed on everyone, as JC Latham #3, Dallas Turner #19 and Terrion Arnold #46 were first round NFL 2024 picks. Jalen MIlroe at #77 is still starring for Alabama. Is 17 out of 100 the record? Is getting so many as valuable as it was in the days before the portal? Look at that attrition.

Ohio State did well also, 12 in the top 100 and 5 in the top 30 (counting Ewers). Several are obvious stars Marvin Harrison, Jr at #87 and Emeka Egbuka at #11. Michael Hall at #97 was a 2nd rounder. Jack Sawyer #12 is still starting and 2nd team all Big Ten. They suffered from attrition as well, besides Ewers, Kyle McCord #35 is qb at Syracuse. Ben Christman #90 is at Kentucky.

Oklahoma did well, Caleb Williams at #6, his receiver Mario Williams at #16, our favorite big mouth Billy Bowman at #48, Clayton Smith at #24, plus two more later in the list. Of course the top 2 ran away when the head coach went to USC.

Texas literally has two top 100 players in 2021, a great one, Xavier Worthy at 67 and good one Ja'Tavion Sanders at 14. Of course this was a change over year, etc. But notable what a blow to the program missing a year is, although perhaps the failure muted a lot by the portal, e.g. Bonds, Golden, Mukuba, etc.

I remember how hard we took losing Bryce Foster #15 to A&M. He washed out and is at Kansas. I don't have to recount the Brockermeyer angst.

JJ McCarthy #45 at Michigan did well.

You have to admire Garrett Nussmeier #80 for sticking it out at LSU, now starting QB.
