Stiles Switch was on today - 10/10 highly recommend

I brought this up in the Michelin thread, but thought I would focus this discussion here:

Went today with my son, who is in his first semester here on campus. Anyways, here is what we had:

Brisket (10/10)
Pork Belly Burnt Ends (9/10)
St. Louis Ribs (9/10 - spicier than I preferred, but loved the sweet and smokiness. Extremely tender, cooked perfectly
Prime Rib (Wednesday special, 10/10)
Tater Tot casserole - 10/10
Corn Casserole/Pudding - 9/10
Brussel Sprouts - best I've had; loved the serrano glaze

Needless to say, I think this was better than Truth (I'm from Houston). I really enjoyed all of it. The Brisket was from the lean end and it was fall apart tender and had a really great smokiness to it.

Next time I'm going to try to Beef Rib to compare it to Killen's.

Many of you said La Barbecue is better so I will be hitting that next time I'm in Austin - maybe KY weekend.

The place was packed but we probably only waited in line for 10 minutes - they seem to do a great job of keeping that line moving.

FBI Brass ‘Stunned’ and ‘Shell Shocked’ Over Trump Reelection

"The brass on the seventh floor at FBI headquarters in Washington are walking around in a daze and wary of a housecleaning since President-elect Donald Trump won his reelection on Tuesday, according to inside sources."

“It’s a countdown for Wray because [people here] don’t think he will stay to get fired after what Trump did to Comey,” the first source said. “Trump will say, Yeah, ’fire his ass. Don’t let him take the plane home,” a reference to Mr. Comey finding out about his termination while flying to California on the bureau’s airplane."

"A third FBI source said some bureau personnel who are tired of the Jan. 6 investigations are amused “at the fact that Trump [likely] pardons everybody involved Jan. 6.”

"Additionally, many on the 7th floor of the FBI are concerned about billionaire tech executive Elon Musk, owner of X and Tesla, being brought into the Trump administration as head of a government efficiency commission."

“When he tries to do efficiency at headquarters, the place is going to have five people … if he’s talking about a lot of dead weight,” a second FBI source said."

OT: Lost my pup this am

The day I've been dreading came today. We lost our 12 yo girl Belle. Vet said she was a lab mix with some Aussie Cattle dog in her, but I just called her a "red dog". She put up a good fight against cancer and was hanging in there ok. Didn't think she was this close, but we could tell she was a little puny last night and was gone this morning. She still found the energy to love us unconditionally every minute of every day. We got her from a shelter when she was a pup, and she was the sweetest, most loving dog you could imagine. She was the pup my kids (now adults) all grew up with, and they're all crushed. Going to miss my girl.

Astrodome news

put me in the camp that they should have just torn in down years ago if they had planned for it to just sit unused for nearly 20 years. I believe it was last used for housing Katrina victims in 2005.

Looks like a group is now pushing to make it a big venue now with rebuilt arena and buildings and restaurants inside.

UT Admissions - Impossible to Get In?

Last week, I was surprised to hear my nephew had not gotten into UT.

He was in the Top 3-4% of his class at a very competitive high school. My sister said his test scores were very good. He is a great kid, captain on the FB team, an Eagle Scout, and has done a ton of community service. If he passes his AP Exams, he will go to school as a second semester sophomore. He is literally the type of HS kid that I want my son to be like.

This weekend, I was chatting with my mom, who is elderly and often confused about things. She claimed the valedictorian didn't get in either.

Not believing mom, I reached out to my sister for clarification.
1) My nephew got into UT, but not for pre-med.
2) The valedictorian got in, but not for his preferred major.

Apparently, the auto admit only applies if you agree to major in something unpopular.

Why I am pissed? He is likely to be an Aggie.

Dia Bell lands NIL deal

This summer, the state of Florida approved a plan that allows high school students to get paid through NIL deals. Other states, including California, have been doing the same for a couple of years.

On Wednesday, Texas commitment Dia Bell announced that he has partnered with FreeForm Sports, a "leading manufacturer of football equipment, to provide custom numbered thigh pads for his high school football team as they head into the playoffs."

Of note, Travis Hunter is another who has partnered with FreeForm. Perhaps the most interesting note ... FreeForm Sports is based out of Austin based on their X page.

Just our luck, huh?

Crazy how a decade plus of “Texas could never make it through an SEC schedule” magically turned into “Texas has the easiest SEC schedule of all time” within our very first year in the conference. Who could’ve seen THAT coming?🤔

Guess it’s our fault for having 4 blue bloods and 2 of our biggest rivals (away from home) on our schedule. Next time we should schedule perennial powerhouse Indiana!

I WAS TOLD BY OB NOT TO WORRY ABOUT MICHIGAN

I posted that I was very worried about Michigan gm at Ann arbor in September. Ketch sent a reply stating Michigan has lost most of their team and there was little to worry about .BS .Look at how many players are rated in the top 100 of cfb from UM , plus the big house factor .I have attended several games at the big house when another team is considered a big time program , and the pressure applied by their fan base .The 2nd gm of the year in Ann Arbor is like a Norman Rockwell painting , so simple, so American and just plain beautiful.
Its pure football , with no scoreboard bs and bs music .Very pure.

From the Arkansas Rival's site

The Arkansas Razorbacks (5-4, 3-3 SEC) will play their first ever Southeastern Conference game Saturday against a familiar rival in the No. 3 Texas Longhorns (8-1, 4-1 SEC) at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville.

It's hard to not think about the last time these two teams met, when the Razorbacks knocked off the Longhorns, 40-21, in front of an incredible crowd at Razorback Stadium on Sept. 11, 2021. Since then, both programs have changed significantly, with Texas once again being in the conversation of college football's top teams.

"Boy, I’d like to live on that (2021 game) and make it make a difference in Saturday’s game, but it certainly won’t," Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman said Wednesday. "What they’ve done is they’ve recruited extremely well. They’ve gotten so much more physical and bigger on the offensive line and defensive line. Got linebackers that can run. They’re a big football team. Certainly not big and slow, they’re big and fast. They went out and got a kick returner and a punt returner. Of course, they have two of the better quarterbacks on one team I’ve ever seen.

"What (Steve Sarkisian) has done, he’s went in there and recruited extremely well, hired a staff of great coaches that are coaching extremely well and the kids play hard and they’ve got good players. I’m not for sure that they necessarily had that when he took the job. I’m not trying to demean anybody, but they’re much more talented than what they were when he took the job. That’s certainly a credit to him and his recruiting staff and his coaches."

The Longhorns rank top-40 nationally in every defensive statistical category listed. Texas is top-4 in scoring defense (4th), total defense (2nd) and pass defense (1st). On the other hand, the Razorbacks rank 79th, 90th and 124th in those respective categories.

Texas also has three former five-star recruits and 13 former four-stars listed as starters, per the team's game notes. Arkansas has 12 former four-stars listed as starters and one former five-star.

HawgBeat has also compared both teams' grades from Pro Football Focus, which is a football analytics website that provides grades for each individual player and full teams after analyzing each game for all Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) teams. Grades are given from 0-100, with the higher the grade signifying better performance.

OT: advice for housing for first year UT student?

Hey all, I searched here and didn’t find any specific info. I’m curious from those that have insight on best off campus housing for freshmen at UT. My daughter and I did a campus tour this week, and it’s her first choice. She’s not a lock to get in, but good enough where I don’t mind risking a deposit. Any suggestions or advice? We have looked at Callaway House and Moon Tower. Callaway seems more geared towards first year, so leaning there. Thanks in advance.
