Texas BASEBALL - Saturday Boogie - RECAP

FINAL
Texas - 10
Baylor - 2

Winning Pitcher: Ace Whitehead (2-0)
Losing Pitcher: Collin McKinney (1-3)

RECAP
At the end of the day, it isn’t about the stuff you have, but with how you compete and Ace “Boogie” Whitehead sure did that. He will never overpower a hitter, but he uses his three pitch mix effectively all day long and ends up throwing a complete game, the first since Lebarron Johnson Jr did it against Miami in the 2023 Coral Gables Regional.

The Horns also got the bats going early and often, scoring 10 runs on 11 hits, battering the Bears for 4 runs in the 1st inning as Max Belyeu hit a 2 out changeup into LF for an RBI single and then Will Gasparino followed that up with a 3 run home run over the Yeti Yard.

Ace Whitehead, getting his first ever weekend start, and only the 5th of his career gave up a run in the Top 2nd, but got a strikeout and a ground out to limit the damage. His offense immediately got the run back in the Bottom 2nd as Jared Thomas hit a 2 out home run into the Texas bullpen to make it 5-1 Horns.

In the 3rd inning, the Bears again pushed a run across with a bases loaded single, but a laser from Porter Brown in LF to Galvan at the plate got the runner going from 2B to home and prevented a third run from scoring, making it a 5-2 ballgame. That in fact would be the last run of the game that starter Ace Whitehead would allow.

In the 4th inning, the Horns offense tacked on another run as Jared Thomas hit an RBI single to CF, driving in Rylan Galvan who had hit a 1 out double to the wall in right CF, making it 6-2.

In the 6th inning, the Horns tacked on another run as Dee Kennedy hit a 2 out double to the gap in right CF, driving in Rylan Galvan who had led off the inning with a walk, making it 7-2 Texas.

In the 8th inning, with the Horns cruising thanks to 13 straight put outs by Ace Whitehead on the mound, the Horns tacked on 3 more runs. Rylan Galvan crushed a fastball to right CF to make it 8-2. Porter Brown then walked, bringing Jared Thomas to the plate and on a full count, he hit an oppo taco to the bullpen in LF for a 2 run home run to make it 10-2.

In the Top of the 9th, to a standing ovation, Ace Whitehead got a fly out, a ground out, and a strike out to end it. What a performance by the two-sport start from Lampasas!

BIG MOMENT
In the Bottom 1st, the Horns had an early 1-0 lead over the Bears. Not satisfied with that, freshman Will Gasparino turned on an inside pitched and blasted it to LF for a 3 run home run. In the end, that was all the offense the Horns would need, despite tacking on 7 more throughout the game.

INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE

Going with a two-for here.

Jared Thomas went 4-5 on the day with 4 hits, 3 runs, 4 RBI, 2 HRs, 1K and a stolen base. Yes sir, that will do for a lead off hitter.

LHP Ace Whitehead, making his first weekend start and only the 5th start of the season went 9 innings, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits, walking 1 batter and striking out 5. Out of the 119 total pitches, he threw 75 strikes and kept the Bears hitters off kilter all day long, no powering them, but moving inside/out and changing the eye level. In addition, he mixed in an effective changeup to change the velocity and keep the bats off balls.

TAKEAWAYS

It shouldn’t be, today was essentially a must win game. Tomorrow is the same, but that is tomorrow’s problem. Today, the Horns competed well in all three aspects of the game. Pitching, Hitting, and Defense. When the Horns are able to do that, they win. When the Horns score first, they are 7-3 on the year.

The defense behind Ace was very good today and the hitters came out and stayed balanced throughout each at-bat, going deep in the pitch counts and driving them up To help deliver a win.

So enjoy a cold one, watching some March Madness, cry over your tattered brackets and gear up for a series finale tomorrow.

This is a PERFECT recipe for...

Oatmeal Raisin Cookies. You're welcome.

Ingredients
1 cup all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup coconut oil or unsalted butter, melted
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 large egg
1 large egg yolk
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 1/2 cup whole rolled oats
3/4 cup raisins
1/2 cup chopped walnuts, optional

-Preheat the oven to 350°F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
-Combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon in a large bowl. -In a separate bowl, whisk together the melted coconut oil, sugar, whole egg, egg yolk, and vanilla, whisking vigorously.
-Stir the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir in the oats, raisins, and walnuts, if using, folding into a tight batter. -Set the dough aside for 20 minutes while the oven preheats. (Note: if your dough seems too wet to become scoop-able, chill it in the fridge for this 20 minutes and it'll firm up). If your dough is too crumbly, stir in 2 to 3 tablespoons water.
-Use a cookie scoop to divide the dough into 20 tablespoon-sized balls. Roll lightly in barely damp hands to make them round. -Spread out onto the prepared baking sheets and bake until puffed, golden, and a touch underbaked-looking, 10 to 11 minutes. Let cool on the pans for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

OT: phone has been hacked. What do I do???

I had to get a new phone Tuesday. It has been hacked by a virus. My password has been changed for a few things. I noticed Clash of Clans game first, I was locked out. I received emails of password changes, or attempts. Instagram, which I never use, is changed, I get a photo of a guy that is not me.. Some emails were deleted.

How do I handle this? I am afraid to turn my phone off, it may ask me for a code to access it?

I guess I need to call my bank and credit card companies.

I have 3 email addresses. I know the one I use for most things was hit, I got emails for subscriptions to tinder, dating sites, etc., which were deleted. Probably the others eventually. I have changed things with the email/PW combo I know they started with. Do I set up a new email account? Gmail? And switch everything over to that? All social media, games, card accounts, subscriptions, utility accts. etc?

I don't see the guys at Best Buy or AT&T store being much help. What about these CPR (Cell Phone Repair) and UBreakIFix stores? I don't know if installing Norton or such would help at this point.

When I try to log in to change info, I get calls from 1-213-340-2489 in Los Angeles. I found a Reddit post about it, someone else encountered it with their Uber account. I changed my Uber sign in, wonder how long it will be safe.

Anyone with experience with this?

Ketch and Co, I am going to try to send a message to you not to let my info be changed.

Texas BASEBALL - Extra Innings Thud - RECAP

FINAL
Texas - 3
Baylor - 4

Winning Pitcher: Ethan Calder (1-1)
Losing Pitcher: Gage Boehm (1-2)
BOX SCORE

RECAP
On a night when Texas got 7 strong innings from starter Lebarron Johnson Jr, the Horns offense completely fell on its face. The Horns continue to struggle to perform in all three aspects of the game and that was no more apparent then tonight. While the first four hitters in the lineup went 6-18, the 5-9 hitters went a combined 1-21. No, that is not a typo, ONE for TWENTY ONE. Not only that, the Horns twice had bases loaded and only came away with two runs.

After the game was over, many of the starters sat in the dugout reflecting on what had just transpired. The mood was clearly one of frustration. The biggest question is, how will they respond tomorrow. Will they come out with an edge or will they let tonight's game carry over.

The Horns got things started early, as they had bases loaded with no outs thanks to back to back hits by Thomas and Powell, and Flores reaching 1B on a fielding error. Kimble Schuessler unfortunately hit a ground ball on the infield, resulting in a run scoring, but also a double play. On the second pitch her saw, Max Belyeu hit a ground out to 1B, resulting in a Texas 1-0 lead going to the 2nd.

In the Top of the 2nd, the Bears pulled a run back when they got a 1 out single to left field, followed by a double to right center field, tying up the game at 1-1.

In the Bottom 3rd inning, the Horns took the lead back on a Kimble Schuessler single to left field, scoring Peyton Powell. Unfortunately, the middle of the lineup again failed to bring home a runner in scoring position with just 1 out.

The Texas and Baylor pitching staffs then put up zeroes in the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings, before the Bears broke through in the Top 7th with a crooked number.

In the Top 7th, Lebarron Johnson Jr gave up a lead off single to freshman Chase Womack, who entered the game with a batting average of .071. Then with 1 out and a runner on 1B, 9 hole hitter Harrison Caley hit a double to RF over the head of Max Belyeu as he misjudged the path of the ball, tying the game and putting a runner on 2B. Kimble Schuessler then allowed a ball to come out of his glove and trickle behind home plate. As he stood there with no idea where the ball was, the runner on 2B moved over to 3B. The next hitter Mason Greer then hit a slider that caught too much of the plate to RF, giving the Bears a 3-2 lead.

The Horns battled back in the Bottom 8th to tie the game up, but again completely fumbled the job as they had bases loaded again with no outs, but could only get a single run across to tie the game up at 3-3.

In the Top 11th, Boehm gave up a lead off single to third base, as the ball took an awkward hop and came off Peyton Powell. A soft grounder back to the mound moved the runner into scoring position with just 1 out. Boehm then hung a breaking ball and Daniel Altman hit a ball into the gap in left center, scoring the runner and giving the Bears a 4-3 lead.

BIG MOMENT
In the Bottom of the 8th, Max Belyeu came to the plate with the bases loaded and no outs. Max had the opportunity to make up for his errant fielding earlier in the game and not just tie the game, but set up the Horns to win it. Instead, Max hit a ball on the ground to 2B and the Bears were able to complete the double play. That play did plate a run to tie the game, but the Horns missed a massive opportunity and it eventually cost them.

INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE
There really was not a stand out tonight for the Horns, but if there was, it would be Peyton Powell who went 2-4, scoring 2 runs and walking once.

TAKEAWAYS
There is simply no excuse for going 1 for 21 if you are Texas.

The good news is that the Horns only used two pitchers on the evening, while Baylor used two of their best arms in Hail (30 pitches) and Calder (40 pitches), meaning they likely won't be available till Sunday, if at all.

The Horns will need to play much cleaner baseball, especially late in the game tomorrow if they want to avoid losing the series.

TRE JOHNSON IS COLD BLOODED!

Tonight, in Link Academy’s win over Oak Hill, Tre Johnson finished with 23 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds and hit a clutch go-ahead step back 3. I don’t see any reason for Texas to lose him, but Rodney Terry MUST hold onto him.

From @Keenan Womack when Tre signed back in November…

WBB: #1 Texas vs #16 Drexel - Longhorns cruise, 82-42

The #4 ranked Texas Longhorns (30-4) face the Drexel Dragons (19-14) in the 1st round of the NCAA tournament. Drexel finished 7th in their conference but got into the NCAA tourney by winning the Coastal Athletic conference tournament with 4 wins in 4 days, winning three of those games by two points or less before they took down top-seeded Stony Brook, 68-60.

The Dragons have been very lucky on the injury front with 5 players starting at least 32 of their 33 games. I assumed they would be one of the typical undersized mid-majors who spread out the floor to jack up shots from beyond the arc but they only average 14.7 attempts per game (307th nationally) and hit 30.5% of them team. That's 39 spots above Texas at 346 (out of 349 teams) at 11.0 3-pt attempts per game, making 36.4%.

They seem to win a lot of close games shooting mid-range jumpers and keeping the score low by slowing down tempo. They averaged 57.7 ppg and gave up 55.1.

Drexel's Starting 5:
  • 5' 8" G Amaris Baker: 11.8 ppg, 4.2 rebounds
  • 5' 11" G Brooke Mullin: 10.3 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 3.7 apg
  • 5' 7" G Grace O'Neill: 5.1 ppg, 5.3 rebounds
  • 6' F Chloe Hodges: 8.7 ppg, 5.0 rpg
  • 6' 2" F Hetta Saatman: 5.0 ppg, 2.3 rpg
Texas Starting 5:
  • 6' 1" G Madison Booker: 16.9 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 4.9 apg
  • 5' 10" Shaylee Gonzales: 9.4 ppg, 3.4 rpg
  • 6' G Shay Holle: 7.7 ppg, 2.6 rpg
  • 6' 1" F Aaliyah Moore: 10.9 ppg, 5.8 rpg
  • 6' 4" C Taylor Jones: 12.4 ppg, 6.5 rpg
Drexel faced only 1 high major team this season, taking a 76-56 loss to FSU (a 9-seed and possible Longhorns opponent in the 2nd round).

Vic should be able to keep his starters‘ legs fresh and get a lot of bench players some time in this one as Texas should win this by 30+.
