Losing Pitcher: Collin McKinney (1-3)
RECAP
At the end of the day, it isn’t about the stuff you have, but with how you compete and Ace “Boogie” Whitehead sure did that. He will never overpower a hitter, but he uses his three pitch mix effectively all day long and ends up throwing a complete game, the first since Lebarron Johnson Jr did it against Miami in the 2023 Coral Gables Regional.
The Horns also got the bats going early and often, scoring 10 runs on 11 hits, battering the Bears for 4 runs in the 1st inning as Max Belyeu hit a 2 out changeup into LF for an RBI single and then Will Gasparino followed that up with a 3 run home run over the Yeti Yard.
Ace Whitehead, getting his first ever weekend start, and only the 5th of his career gave up a run in the Top 2nd, but got a strikeout and a ground out to limit the damage. His offense immediately got the run back in the Bottom 2nd as Jared Thomas hit a 2 out home run into the Texas bullpen to make it 5-1 Horns.
In the 3rd inning, the Bears again pushed a run across with a bases loaded single, but a laser from Porter Brown in LF to Galvan at the plate got the runner going from 2B to home and prevented a third run from scoring, making it a 5-2 ballgame. That in fact would be the last run of the game that starter Ace Whitehead would allow.
In the 4th inning, the Horns offense tacked on another run as Jared Thomas hit an RBI single to CF, driving in Rylan Galvan who had hit a 1 out double to the wall in right CF, making it 6-2.
In the 6th inning, the Horns tacked on another run as Dee Kennedy hit a 2 out double to the gap in right CF, driving in Rylan Galvan who had led off the inning with a walk, making it 7-2 Texas.
In the 8th inning, with the Horns cruising thanks to 13 straight put outs by Ace Whitehead on the mound, the Horns tacked on 3 more runs. Rylan Galvan crushed a fastball to right CF to make it 8-2. Porter Brown then walked, bringing Jared Thomas to the plate and on a full count, he hit an oppo taco to the bullpen in LF for a 2 run home run to make it 10-2.
In the Top of the 9th, to a standing ovation, Ace Whitehead got a fly out, a ground out, and a strike out to end it. What a performance by the two-sport start from Lampasas!

BIG MOMENT
In the Bottom 1st, the Horns had an early 1-0 lead over the Bears. Not satisfied with that, freshman Will Gasparino turned on an inside pitched and blasted it to LF for a 3 run home run. In the end, that was all the offense the Horns would need, despite tacking on 7 more throughout the game.

INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE
Going with a two-for here.
Jared Thomas went 4-5 on the day with 4 hits, 3 runs, 4 RBI, 2 HRs, 1K and a stolen base. Yes sir, that will do for a lead off hitter.
LHP Ace Whitehead, making his first weekend start and only the 5th start of the season went 9 innings, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits, walking 1 batter and striking out 5. Out of the 119 total pitches, he threw 75 strikes and kept the Bears hitters off kilter all day long, no powering them, but moving inside/out and changing the eye level. In addition, he mixed in an effective changeup to change the velocity and keep the bats off balls.

TAKEAWAYS
It shouldn’t be, today was essentially a must win game. Tomorrow is the same, but that is tomorrow’s problem. Today, the Horns competed well in all three aspects of the game. Pitching, Hitting, and Defense. When the Horns are able to do that, they win. When the Horns score first, they are 7-3 on the year.
The defense behind Ace was very good today and the hitters came out and stayed balanced throughout each at-bat, going deep in the pitch counts and driving them up To help deliver a win.
So enjoy a cold one, watching some March Madness, cry over your tattered brackets and gear up for a series finale tomorrow.
