THREE THINGS WE LEARNED
1. Texas will get an official visit from receiver Taz Williams
Red Oak wide receiver
Taz Williams has no shortage of options, with more than 40 schools having extended scholarship offers to the Rivals250 member. Williams has mostly settled on about 10 schools and is close to releasing a formal list of favorites, but wants to finalize that list one more time after the recent college football coaching carousel shook things up a bit.
“I’m trying to narrow everything down. Hopefully a top 10 will be coming soon. That’s what I’m working towards,” Williams said. “I’m excited for that.”
The Texas Longhorns are one of the schools in the mix, and Williams has talked to the UT coaches about taking an official visit sometime in the summer.
“Texas is a school I know I’ll be taking an OV to. I’ve already told them, so I’ll be there for an OV,” Williams said.
Over the weekend, the 6-0, 180-pound Williams texted with UT wide receivers coach Chris Jackson as they work to find a date for that official visit. Jackson, who has only been at UT for a little more than one year, has developed a strong relationship with Williams after getting a late start compared to some other programs.
“He tells me all the time that he’s new to it so he’s still figuring things out. He and I are figuring things out at the same time,” Williams said. “I’m learning from him, he’s learning from me.”
After taking the Texas job, Jackson told Williams he wanted to evaluate him in person before extending a formal offer. Last spring, Jackson made a stop by Red Oak to see Williams and later that day, the offer was extended. Since then, the two have developed a strong connection.
“I’ve got a good relationship with coach Jackson. I talk to him a lot,” Williams said. “When I need to, I’ll hit him up. He played the position, he coached it in the NFL so he knows what he’s talking about. He’s done it, so you can’t beat that.”
Along with a Texas official visit, Williams said Ohio State, Michigan and Texas A&M are among the other schools he’d like to visit. He plans to make a commitment just before his senior season begins.
2. Melvin Hills feels good about signing with Texas after meeting Kenny Baker
When Bo Davis left Texas to coach at LSU, it sent shockwaves through some of the Longhorns’ interior defensive line signees.
Alex January stayed the course and enrolled at UT in January. D’Antre Robinson asked out of his letter of intent and has since signed with Florida.
Melvin Hills, who won’t enroll until the summer, had some very real thoughts about finding another school but after meeting with Baker in late January, Hills is once again locked in and excited about his future at Texas.
“I feel good on it. I feel it’s a safe decision still,” Hills said this week. “I feel like I’m still going to be comfortable with them, it’ll be home.”
Out of Lafayette Christian Academy, Hills said he’ll likely visit UT for the Orange-White game in April, where he’ll have another chance to connect with his new position coach. Looking back at his signing with Texas, Bo Davis was certainly a part of that decision, but Hills said it was more about the overall camaraderie he sees in the UT program.
“Seeing the players, how they’re performing, how they interact with each other, that shows Texas is a family,” Hills said. “Seeing the coaches with the players, how they all believe in each other, you can see the culture is there.”
Hills will move to Austin on June 1. He recently weighed in at 280 pounds and said his goal is to maintain that weight without losing any of his quickness.
“I want to keep that weight and be able to move with it,” Hills said. “I want to keep my strength and speed, gain knowledge of the game, just get ready to come compete.”
Hills watches film of defensive linemen but said he actually focuses on some of the offensive line greats of the game – guys like Trent Williams and Jason Kelce - to see what defensive linemen have used against them to have success.
“I look at the best players, envision moves that could beat them. The best ones in the game, if you can beat them then you’re good,” Hills said.
3. The Longhorns are in a strong early position for tight end Zane Rowe
Tight end
Zane Rowe is still young as a member of the 2027 class, but college coaches have already taken notice, with Rowe holding 24 scholarship offers. Texas is one of the programs that has put an offer on the table for the Denton Guyer product, and though he’s still exploring all options, Rowe has the Longhorns high on his list.
“Big picture, they’re definitely in my top five. I don’t have anybody ranked right now, but they’re definitely in that top-five, top-three conversation,” Rowe said of the Longhorns. “I love the energy there. I love the culture there. I’m really connected with the coaching staff there. I just love the environment at Texas.”
Rowe stays in touch with Texas tight ends coach Jeff Banks and says those two have developed a strong connection.
“I’m always in contact with coach Banks. I try to talk to him once or twice a week,” Rowe said. “He says to keep handling my business, keep playing physical and just help my team win the best I can.
“Our relationship is great. He’s going to coach you hard, but he’s going to love you at the same time. He’s hard on you, but he’s going to build you up after he breaks you down. He’s a great coach.”
At 6-5 and 230 pounds, Rowe is a match-up headache for opposing defenses, and his combination of size and athleticism make him an intriguing prospect to follow as his recruitment continues to develop.
“What I bring to the table is that I’m a middle-of-the-field target. I free up my receivers because everybody wants to put a safety on me, double me,” Rowe said. “Things I can work on is getting off the press, finding ways to sit in zones.”
Rowe plans to take March visits to Oklahoma and Houston and he intends to attend the Texas spring game in April.

TWO QUESTIONS
1. What does Melvin Hills think of Kenny Baker?
In speaking with Hills, it sounds like his meeting with Kenny Baker went exceptionally well.
“He’s a good dude. He’s honest. He has great energy towards the game, a great mindset,” Hills said. “He sees the game with a good perspective. He’s coached on every level. He understands different levels of the game, what you need to get to the next level.
“He stays hyped. He’s also a good religious man. He’s positive, but keeps it real at the same time.”
Meeting Baker helped put to bed any questions Hills had about his future at Texas.
“It eases my concerns,” Hills said. “It shows they brought in a good caliber coach.”
The message to Hills during his meeting with Baker was that Baker will help Hills maximize his talent, and if Hills earns it he’ll have a chance to be an early contributor.
“He wanted to make sure I knew that everything is going to be the same. He plays freshmen, and is not afraid to put the best man on the field,” Hills said.
2. Is Patrick Mahomes going to go down as the greatest QB in NFL history?
In six years as a starting quarterback in the NFL, Patrick Mahomes has now led the Kansas City Chiefs to four Super Bowl appearances, three Super Bowl titles, he’s won three Super Bowl MVPs and two regular-season MVPs.
Tom Brady still ranks as the GOAT, with seven Super Bowl wins, five Super Bowl MVPs and three regular-season MVPs, but Mahomes is quickly climbing the ranks and if he can sustain some of the longevity that Brady enjoyed, he could have a legitimate case at some point to lay claim to the best to ever play the position.
Growing up, I never thought I’d see a better quarterback than Joe Montana. Then Brady came along. Now, I’d have to slot my top five as follows …
1. Tom Brady
2. Patrick Mahomes
3. Joe Montana
4. Peyton Manning
5. Dan Marino

ONE PREDICTION – Texas lands Boobie Feaster
We’re a looooong way from
Boobie Feaster making a commitment … the dude is only a freshman in high school … but if things stay the course they’re currently on, I like UT’s chance of eventually landing the ultra-talented receiver out of DeSoto.
