What a kick in the nuts it was initially, but what a game and a season to look back on with just a little time to reflect. This won't be a traditional Deep Dig, as we don't have the time on a short week to get it all done as usual -- plus the basement dwellers are still not in the best mood, and I've decided to steer clear until things blow over a bit.
However, I did go back through the game and do a Deep Dig-like exercise. It was a nice treat to have the SkyCam angle from the CFP games to watch back which of course gives a slightly different perspective to certain plays and situations from what may have been remembered best from the broadcast angle when watching live.
A few quick takeaways and thoughts:
- Texas had a chance to sub and didn’t put in Sweat and Murphy on 4th down in the second quarter (series 5). When they had two chances to substitute, they left in Trill Carter and Vernon Broughton (after the two backups had started the series and played on the first three plays, so Sweat and Murphy were definitely fresh and not winded). This was the series of plays that started with one that was reviewed for the original spot and was made a 4th down and short. Even though they brought in Collins at DE and Gbenda/Blackwell to make the heavy package, they left out Sweat and Murphy in the line's interior. DeBoer tried to draw Texas offsides with that play and failed to do so, giving Texas yet another chance to substitute before ultimately giving up the 4th-and-short run right up the gut.
- Alfred Collins played a VERY good game by his standards and Texas really, really, really, could use him back. No one will replace Sweat and Murphy, but Collins would be a giant addition considering the odds are not good of Carter or Broughton living up to any sort of potential. Carter played miserably versus UW and Broughton was really not any better, but that was to be expected as they have not been good all season. They are descending players. Texas, with Collins, would have a little bit of veteran leeway to start speeding up the bringing-along process of younger upside options like Sydir Mitchell or D'Antre Robinson, etc.
- Texas losing it's defensive identity from 2023 going into 2024 (a dominant interior DL) should not be a reason for total alarm. Teams are built differently from season to season and personnel group to personnel group. All of the sudden, Texas may be a little weaker up the middle, but look at what excellent pieces are coming in to buttress the back end at safety and corner. Anthony Hill will be a sophomore next year and one of the best LBs in the country despite being used head-scratchingly in the CFP. The superpower of the team moving forward could be the back-end. Some kinda Kobe Black-Manny Muhammad-Xavier Filsaime-Andrew Mukuba No-Fly zone. It could be the linebackers and the pass rush with Collin Simmons and Trey Moore coming to town. It will be exciting to watch unfold.
- One thing that I predict will happen is Ethan Burke moving to SDE. He has looked good against the run this year - and in this game - and he has grown into that type of body where his bend and burst off the edge is fine but not trending toward elite. Barryn Sorrell is a good player but doesn't need to play 80% of the snaps, he just doesn't. Sorrell and Burke can platoon that deal, which would bump Justice Finkley somewhat out of the picture, and allow the buck end competition to ramp up between Trey Moore, Colin Simmons and, hopefully by then, a Colton Vasek who's bigger and better after a year in the program. All of the sudden this looks like a salty bunch on the edges and almost a logjam of talent.
- It really feels like Texas didn't get much pressure in this game, but watching back, they really did SORT of pressure Penix a decent bit, but kept slipping and taking horrible angles to pursue him in the pocket and beyond. If the UW pass rush hadn't been more on-point in affecting Ewers, I would have said there was an issue with the turf or something. Damndest thing I've ever seen.
- Well, close to the damndest, the damndest was Michael Penix going into god-mode and just running so hot like the sun. There were times when I didn't know whether to charge a Texas CB with a coverage burn or just a completion allowed because no matter how good the coverage was, the ball was getting dropped in there like a precision drone strike. Over and over to really good receivers. Just a total buzzsaw to run into. Sure, there were some obvious burns in the game, but man ... there was really just a lot of excellent play from the UW passing and receiving game. I had Texas DBs with 25 targets against them in total and only 3 were incomplete while only one PBU was generated (Michael Taaffe).
- There should be open competition for the outside corner jobs this spring. Muhammad would win one, but I'm not so sure Brooks is a lock in the same way. He'd be the odds-on favorite for sure, but he hasn't been good enough to be bequeathed a position without competition from extremely talented newcomers.
- One final thing when mentioning the safeties. The broadcast team of Sean McDonough and Greg McElroy have access all week to both coaching staffs via production meetings and are given inside information they take professional care not to share with others in order to help them with the broadcast. This happens in every broadcast prior to the game, but even more so in these big-time spots. When they are bantering back and forth, saying things about Derek Williams being the team's best cover safety, and Derek Williams being a big time loss in the first half and Derek Williams being one of the keys to the team's future, that's a time you should listen because that is coming straight from the coaches.
