    Annual Offseason Thread of Firearms

My opinion, using the .223 for deer is for experts. Like the 28 ga for doves. Yes, an expert may enjoy it. But there is little margin for error. I believe the .223 is likely to be too small for a clean kill for an 8 year old. .243 is widely available (unlike grendel and Wylde), low recoil, but...

My carry is a M&P compact. My local gunsmith says that he has NEVER seen one for repair. I suggested the SIG because it seems to be widely available and well thought of.

I got a 380 EZ for my wife. It's larger than my M&P compact, shooting a smaller cartridge. But she can work it. For you, I'd look at the SIG 365 if I was starting from scratch. I like modifying, I put night sights and an after market trigger on mine. I can put 7 into a dinner plate at 25 yards.

My days of roaming the mountains searching for muleys or elk are over. I wouldn't use a cartridge that I couldn't buy spares for at WalMart. Just in case the airline lost my ammo.

I quit shotgunning after I lost the vision in my left eye. Still shooting rifles. Drew a TPWD hunt at Government Canyon this fall, shot a buck and a doe. 2 shots to check zero, 2 shots to kill 2 deer. Now Schuetzen season begins, I'll go through a lot of Eley Tenex. I may go through a brick.

My second child was premature and colicky. Cried every night. Then the pediatrician said give her just a drop of whisky. She slept thru the night. Not me, I was checking her all night to be sure that she was breathing.

    Any optometrist/ophthalmologist on the board?

Huge difference between optometry and opthalmology. Opthalmologists don't just go to medical school. Most of the residents were Alpha Omega Alpha. Like Phi Beta Kappa for M.D.s. Top 10 % of the class. Example: In North Texas, my local opthalmologist wouldn't refract children. He wanted to leave...
