Oh, I'll have a lot more in the coming hours (including a podcast), but I wanted to share a few instant thoughts following the news of the day.

1. Texas had to make a change. 2022 recruiting wasn't going to improve significantly under Herman with top prospects still feeling lukewarm about the direction he was taking the program and the program just couldn't allow for the likes of Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Texas A&M to start leaving the Longhorns any more behind than the school had already been left behind..

There will be think pieces across the nation about what just happened and they'll call Texas out for not giving Herman more time, but at the end o the day, a change had to be made.

2. The BMDs won out and this should represent a serious sign that Texas isn't just about cashing checks as a program. Chris Del Conte gave serious pause to the buyout money involved and the university did not stop at any yellow lights.

3. There's no getting away from the hire of Steve Sarkisian is a calculated risk. Up until now, his seven-year history as a head coach has been a mixed bag. The folks at Washington will tell you he did a great job and the folks at USC will point to a lot of different stuff... some good, some really bad. For a guy that hasn't been a head coach since 2015, he's not a rookie. He has as much experience as Herman has right now. Still, he's never had a season where his team finished without at least four losses and he's never had a final ranking better than the one Herman will post in the season he's been fired over.

4. This is a big win for the Texas offense. Tom Herman's offenses were solid, but his inability to direct the offense itself with confidence was a problem because it's the biggest reason he was hired. In upgrading to Sarkisian, the Longhorns are getting a guy that has directed an offense in the NFL for two seasons before developing one of the greatest offense's in college football history this season.

5. This is a win for recruiting. I'm convinced Texas was heading for a possible Top 20-25 year in recruiting under Herman in 2022. My instant reaction is that Texas will have ground to make up, but it's going to do much, much better than 20-25.

6. I'd be very excited if I was a member of the Texas offense, especially at the quarterback position. This is a guy with a quarterback coaching tree that includes Carson Palmer, Matt Leinert, Mark Sanchez, Jake Locker, Tua Tagovailoa and Mac Jones.

This might be the must underrated aspect of his hire on the bare surface. His quarterbacks hit and this program MUST hit on this position or it will never get over the jump.

7. History will show that Kevin Eltife played a very, very big deal in this all happening as the lead BOR.

8. Texas feels very comfortable with its vetting of Sarkisian. This moved quickly in the last few days, but the process in vetting him has been ongoing for weeks.

9. Keep an eye on Alabama special teams coach and ace recruiter Jeff Banks. There are already whispers that he is a name to watch for new staff members under Sarkisian. Mike Stoops is another name with buzz behind it.

10. Goodbye apathy, hello curiosity.
