10th assistant

Noel Mazzone (old aggy OC) is supposedly coming on staff as a QC. aggy still owes him 1 mil+ and the dude is very well respected as a coach and has worked with a lot of great coaches in the past. Interesting if true

Maybe I’m reading to much in to the Mazzone move, but that doesn’t seem like great news for Tim Beck. Mazzone has been an OC for the better part of two decades and a pretty good one. Doesn’t seem like he’d come in just to analyze tape and chart plays... maybe I’m wrong.

Mazzone may be a decent OC but to call him a "pretty good one" is stretching it. Ive seen this guy throw numerous quick passes at the line or behind the line of scrimmage on 3rd and short just to come up short time after time but then again Beck seems to do some stupid play calling himself. Maybe putting these two "decent" OC's together will form a "pretty good one" but who knows. I sure hope a screen to the running back will be somewhere in the play calling anyway

You can nit pick every OC and go “yeah but he called these plays in this situation”. I’m sure if we looked at Ohio State film we’d see some head scratchers doesn’t change the fact he was one of the top OCs in the country before going to Houston

I care about the overall results, because at the end of the day that’s how coaches are judged.

His 5 years at UCLA his offenses were pretty consistent at 34-38 points a game

His first year at A&M they were around 30 points a game. And last year considering they didn’t really have a QB their offense was ok. So yeah I think “pretty good” is a fairly accurate statement of his abilities.

My guess is that hes taking a year to learn Tom Herman's system, or hes taking a year off from coaching. Herman also might be giving Beck another year with a healthy line and more options at QB.

He was not retained by aggy....thats all i need to know......he is now tainted. Will have to wipe out that aggy mentality to be called "pretty good" again

Pretty sure he is now the OC at Arizona, if I read that correctly

well....I had to unearth it myself....after 45 seconds of intense research I found out we hired him. Thats good news to me. Not a young guy at 50, but great resume. Penn St is still in mourning losing him to Auburn. So how did we get him?

Wouldn't mind seeing him work a little of that Auburn offense into ours.

Hell....I want to see him work a little of that Auburn line into ours

Auburn fans I know think he can coach but not a great recruiter. If he can coach up the OL and improve play calling i'll take it.

I assume he will be replacing our current OL coach? Looks like there will probably be more changes coming. Wonder who Herman plans to call plays.

As as Auburn fan myself, most Auburn fans think he sucks as a coach. Auburn stole him from Penn State. Most of their fans thought he sucked as well

Auburn's offensive line gave up 11 sacks against Clemson and 6 or 7 sacks against Central Florida. Florida is the only SEC offense that gave up more sacks than Auburn. Good luck with him working that into Texas offensive line

I don't know enough to judge him as a coach, but it would be cool if we hired some guys that other programs weren't high fiving about getting rid of.

fyi...Traitor Chip is saying warehime is getting reassigned. Hey may end up being the 10th coach.

auburn fans are excited to get rid of him. im not that concerned with the recruiting aspect of coaches anymore. we need guys that can actually coach.

fans are always happy to act like they are happy when a coach leaves even though they do a good job, they automatically become bad coaches. If he can just do a little better job than warehime then I am ok with that. I am happy Herman recognizes the need to change.

cross fingers...hopefully he is better.

Herb Hand is leaving Auburn for the Big XII.

Auburn's offensive line coach, who received a contract extension earlier this month, is headed to Texas as co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, a source with knowledge of the situation confirmed.

Terms for Hand's deal at Texas, which was first reported by Brett McMurphy, were not immediately available. He earned $420,000 annually under his two-year contract at Auburn, which expired at Jan. 1, and it's unclear if he signed the extension he received following the Peach Bowl.

Last month, Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said Hand, with whom he worked while at Tulsa in 2007-08, would be returning to the staff.

Who Malzahn hires to replace Hand will be have to reshape the offensive line, which will have a third coach in four years, and also help piece together the rest of Auburn's 2018 recruiting class

However, Auburn also allowed 36 sacks on the season at a rate of 2.57 per game, which was 10th in the SEC and 100th nationally, worst in Malzahn's tenure as head coach and most for the program since 2012 (37 sacks, 3.08 per game). The Tigers allowed 23 sacks in their four losses, including 11 against Clemson, which tied for the most allowed in an FBS game over the last five years.

Auburn fans wanted to fire Malzahn up until the Iron Bowl win that put them into the SEC championship game.

If you're looking at sacks keep in mind that Stidham thinks he's Mayfield and doesn't throw the ball away when he should. On top of that, AU played 6 of the top 15 defenses in the nation this season.

Tfloss Update:

Take it FWIW, but Inside Texas doesn't believe the hiring process is complete because Coach Hand is not a playcaller.

They do believe the report of Warehime being re-assigned is credible because something has to give with staff numbers.

The interesting thing is the OC candidate (name not published) they were hearing about a few weeks ago was off the table because he wasn't able to select his own OL coach at the time, but apparently the Hand hire could put things back into play because their offensive philosophies are similar

^^^

Someone on another board made the valid point that Herman calling the offense for the bowl game makes it very hard to return to Beck as the play caller.

Reading around more, Auburn is who leaked Hand's departure and Rhett Lashee as play caller rumors have gone to 11. Basically, look at guys out of the Malzahn and Rich Rod trees as that is whose style of OL/run game Hand has coached for. Rich Rod himself is a name being tossed around.

So I’m confused. Are we getting a new OC or are they just making Warehime the fall guy of sorts?
