There was a time very early in the recruiting process that Marquez Beason thought he was locked in to be a Nebraska Cornhusker. The 2019 athlete committed to Nebraska in April of this year, during his sophomore year at Dallas Bishop Dunne, only to decide in May he wanted to further evaluate his options and decommit from the Huskers.
Beason, a four-star prospect, has seen his offer list grow since decommitting and he continues to explore all opportunities in front of him. One school that’s high on his list is the Texas Longhorns.
Texas offered the 5-11, 175-pound Beason on May 15. On the next day, he formally decommitted from Nebraska. Beason stays in close contact with Texas wide receivers coach Drew Mehringer and football staff member Bryan Carrington, and he’ll visit UT on Friday for the Longhorns’ first ever Stars at Night Showcase.
The Longhorns are high on Beason’s list, but he said he’s not ready to eliminate any programs at this time.
“Texas has said that I can come and change the program and get it to like it was in 2006 when Vince Young was there,” Beason said. “Texas is up there, but I’m looking at all of them right now.”
Beason has visited BYU, Illinois, TCU and Texas A&M this summer. He’ll get a chance to see UT up close on Friday night, and has a longstanding relationship with the UT staff.
“I like the tradition at Texas,” Beason said. “And when they were at Houston, they got their slots the ball in their offense, so I like that.”
Beason said he’s still taking everything in the recruiting process at a slow pace and he wants to take several visits before formulating any type of list. He’s thinking he’ll release a top 10 or top 5 midway through his junior season and may make a commitment next summer. Whoever lands him will get an explosive playmaker who can impact the game in a variety of ways.
“My strengths are my speed, my agility and just my ability to make plays at any point in time,” Beason said.
