Couldn't cut it in the Mexican Leagues
@clob94 I'm an offensive guy, specifically pass game concepts so I'm going to need a spotter here.

I watched the Bowl Game again, and it gave me a bit clearer expectation coming into 2020. I don't quite know what exact defense we will feature, but I do know that we will see more 4 man fronts and that Ossai has been moved to this new DE "Jack" positioin. I'll explain below.

The D is in a much better position than the O in experience and depth.

All-American Candidate - 2

Joseph Ossai. He was very good last year as a Soph, putting up solid #s on a D that was not very good overall. He was an absolute terror in the Bowl game. He missed a few tackles, but most of that can be fixed by controlling his speed at contact point. He is listed currently at 6-4 255. I don't know what he runs, but he is football fast. Now, he will be playing this new "Jack" position which will allow him to be on the LOS more often and rush the passer. He will still drop in coverage sometimes, but he will certainly be more of a DL than LB. As far as if he will have his hand in the dirt, I don't know, but I do know we should expect 10+ sacks from him this year and 20+ tfl. He could be a top 15 pick next April.

Caden Sterns. I was very hard on him last year because he was not performing at a high level for much of the year. It was probably from injuries because his bowl game was outstanding. He was quick down hill. He kept the secondary organized. And he didn't miss tackles. He needs to add some bulk if he wants to stay healthy, but he is every bit the athlete and safety as Delpit and McKinney and could be even better. Safety's don't generally get drafted very high, but they get paid a lot in their 2nd contract. Its weird. Sterns should be a top 3 safety taken next April, if not the first safety taken.

Sucks we will probably lose those 2 next year, but it means we're getting quality players that translate to NFL.

All-Big 12 Candidate - 6

Ossai and Sterns obviously.

Yes, 6 possible guys that could be All-Big 12 guys.

Ta'quon Graham. He had a very quiet year last year on the DL but very productive. 12 tfl and 3.5 sacks. Not jaw dropping numbers, but not bad for a 4 tech in a 3 man front. Another guy that had a killer bowl game. Was a constant problem and forever in the backfield. He is a big fella. Listed at 6-4 300. He doesn't play like he is 300 pounds. One of those project 3* guys Herman likes to take a chance on. I'll be interested to see if moving to a 5 tech will help or hurt his game. Could he move to the 3 tech as an every down DL? I guess it depends on what the younger DEs look like. I doubt it though. Too much experience. Very excited about him this fall!

Keondray Coburn. 6-2 and 340 or whatever this dude is a plugger. I'm not sure how many snaps he can go, but I would imagine it is somewhere in the 45ish range. He will be a force in the run game as a 1 tech and require a double almost every snap. He has a high motor and is very competitive. He will be a huge help to our LB corp. Look for 35+ tackles and half a dozen tfl this year.

Jalen Green and Anthony Cook. I put these guys together because they are so similar in build and technique. They are both long, lean and fast. They are not our fastest defensive backs, but certainly fast enough to play man from time to time. They need to learn how to play through the ball more, even all the way to the ground and their hip quickness nees some fine tuning, but they can glue up with the best of them. And they're both good tacklers and don't shy away from contact. Both are 6-1 I believe and have that reach. Depending on how their Junior year goes, one or two of them might be gone in April.

Solid Starters - all 11

I've included a little bit more than 11 because there will be times when we predominately have 3 LB and 4 DB, and times when we'll have 2 LB and 5 DB.

Juwan Mitchell. I guess there was some issues with Mitchell and some of the coaches last year and he was about to transfer? This was before the bowl game. He had a terrific bowl game, posting 5 tackles and his #6 was inh the backfield a lot. I don't know much about his technical play as I don't watch LBs much during games (mostly interior line play and pass concepts), so I can't give you any kind of analysis. What I do know is that he is fast to the football and can tackle. Hopefully he is happy and ready for a solid Jr. year!

Chris Brown. Not big, not small for a safety. He has decent size and athleticism, but he is a good football player. Reminds me slightly of Vacarro, with a little less production. He was on track for a similar JR year as KV, but missed a few games right in the middle and then played with a cast the next few. Still had 50 tackles and a handful of tfl with a couple of PBUs. Very solid starter. Be interesting to see how he is used in the new D.

BJ Foster. Everyone knows this dude. Came in with Sterns and played a bunch as a frosh. 46 tackles and 9tfl as a freshman led to some lofty expectations. Now I'm not sure if he was hurt or what but the production dropped. Still a good year for a soph, with 34 tckls and 4 tfl, but he is most remembered (to many at least) as the guy who warned Hurts to "slide." He didn't have a particularly good RRR game and seemed to be going through the motions. Many of the dbacks did. He has leaned up and I think will have a stellar junior year. No idea what will be done with him on D, but he's very good and will have a major impact.

Ayodele Adeoye had a solid 2019 with 45 tackles and 3 tfl. Again, I'm no LB guru so I can't say much about his play. I know he is athletic, big and was a top recruit. He should have a big year.

Solid Back-ups - 5

Ojomo. Watson. Adimora. Jamison. Overshown.

Ojomo will get plenty of snaps. He will rotate (if not start) with Coburn and Sweat. We'll see if one of the youngsters can earn some significant snaps and give us a solid 2 deep.

Kenyatta Watson played very well against Tech and he is the physical look with the tools that Ash likes in a corner. He will play and play quite a bit. I'm excited about this dude.

I don't know who Chris Adimora reminds me of, but he reminds me of someone...maybe Michael Griffin...???? Adimora needs to get faster to match Griffin's production, but Adimora certainly has the physical specifics to be a terrific safety. He will get a dozen snaps or so this year per game at one of the safety spots and then step in the next two years.

D'Shawn Jamison is maybe our fastest DB. Took advantage the most of the injury situation last year and earned loads of experience as a soph. He did quite well posting 35 tackles, 3 picks, 6 PBUs and 4 tfl. Dude is a play maker back there and is obviously electric returning punts. This dude oozes athleticism. He has enough to be not only a starter but a Big 12 type player.

My goodness the depth we have in the defensive backfield now is exciting! This is how you develop Thorpe winners and NFL picks year after year. We need to keep this up!

DeMarvion Overshown is one of those tweener guys like Drew Kelson. I think he is moving to LB full time so we'll see how he does in that spot. Athletically he has all the tools. We just need to develop his game and technique. Had 18 tackles and hopefully learned a bunch last year and is ready for more snaps this year.

Question Marks - Front 7 depth.

DL - Sr. Jacoby Jones, Sr. Marqez Bimage, RSF Peter Mpagi, Fr. Vernon Broughton, Jr. Reese Leitao (moved from TE), So. Daniel Carson, RSF Myron Warren, So. Byron Vaughns and Fr. Alfred Collins.

Which of those guys are going to step up and give Texas depth on the DL. Ossai and Graham need back-ups and we need 1 more dude to get into the DT rotation. My bet is on Vaughns, Leitao and Collins to fight for snaps at DE and Jack. I think Broughton will get in the rotation at DT.

LB - RSF Marcus Tillman, RSF David Gbenda, and Jr. Cort Jaquess.

Our LB depth is alarming and probably the scariest thing about this roster. We have some guys that can produce, but we don't have a lot. We have Mitchell, Adeoye and Overshown and then three guys with NO experience. Let me know if I am missing someone, but that is it I think.

Fire away and help me fix what I have gotten wrong.

Nice breakdown. I hadn’t thought about it, but you are right, when was the last time we had this kind of depth? I like our speed on defense as a whole.

BJ Foster wasn't the same after the injury. He did let up on some plays that I noticed. I don't know if it was confidence in his health or if he was still injured or even some of the "late hit" BS calls by the refs caused him to hesitate.

I think our secondary will be better coached this year with Valai and Ash. Our secondary hasn't been horrible, but we have had several times where the wr was able to get behind the safety.

Hopefully the new staff can teach BJ that no good comes from leading with your head....

I was watching Longhorn Extra where Alex Loeb was interviewing Brandon Jones. Loeb asked him for one name who we can look to in the secondary to be the next star at DBU. He gave two names. Caden Stearns and Josh Thompson. I though it was worth mentioning since we have so many DBs-we shall soon see.

I didn't even mention Thompson. *facepalm*

He got hurt early last year and took a RS I think. Just add another one to the list of DB depth we have.

Sterns won't come off the field, he is too good. Then you have Cook, Green, Brown, Jamison, Foster, Adimora, Watson, Boyce and Thompson all pushing for more snaps. That is 9 (10 if you add Sterns) guys with significant playing time and production. And don't forget about the likes of Owens, Caldwell and Estell who probably want to get on the field. And then we're bringing in Alford who could push for some PT. I know I already said this, but this is the kind of depth that breeds success and award winners.

Another glaring ommission from my OP is T'Vondre Sweat. He could be a starter at the 3 or could play both the 1 and 3 and rotate in. I would imagine he will be in the 50ish snaps/game range. He is an absolute monster size wise (6-4, 335) and it is time to start playing like one. Only recorded 9 tackles and 1 tfl last year, but with two interior DL now and Sweat drawing more 1v1 situations you could see a huge uptick in production.

We have decent depth on the DL, but not like in the secondary. Ossai moving to one DE, and Graham on the other, with Coburn/Sweat/Ojomo on the interior you have a very solid 1st group. Time for Vaughns/Carson/Mpagi to develop up! I think Broughton could see significant time as a Freshman.

Sterns will come off the field every time he gets injured. He hasn't held up and entire season yet.

Josh Thompson hasn't done anything noteworthy in pads as of yet. And with no spring ball, he is suspect. Jones must have seen something in the weight room. Oh wait.

Well, my first thought was that Jones was just giving a courtesy shout out to Thompson who could be a close friend. But, I don't know if they are close buddies or if Jones was giving an actual objective opinion. I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt.

I think it is fair to say that in terms of talent and depth we have:
DB - great talent, good-great depth
D-line - great talent, decent-good depth
LB - questionable-good talent, questionable depth.

Yeah, agreed. If I were to give grades...

DL starters - B+ (Ossai A+, Graham B+, Coburn B+, Sweat C+)
DL depth - C- (Ojomo C+, Vaughns C-, Warren D-, Jones D+, Carson D, Collins D+, Broughton D+, Mpagi D+, Leitao D-)
LB starters - B- (Juwon Mitchell B-, Ayodele Adeoye B-)
LB depth - D- (Overshown C, Gbenda D+, Jaquess D-, Ford D-, Tillman D-)
DB starters - A- (Sterns A+, Brown B, Foster B-, Green B, Cook B)
DB depth - B- (Adimora B-, Watson B, Jamison B, Estell C+, Boyce C, Thompson C, Owens D+)

I gave the DL depth a bump because there are so many to choose from, surely one/two will improve significantly with the competition.

I gave the LB depth a small drop because there are so few and guys moving to new spots.

I gave the DB starters a bump because the depth is so good that I think it will push those guys to improve.

I gave the DB depth a bump again because there are so many players, one/two will greatly increase their play via competition.

Overall Grades would be...

DL - B-
LB - C-
DB - B+

I think we are getting back to a highly competitive and deep DB room. That can really push guys to improve. I like hearing Rod Babers talk on the Blitz podcast about the DB and WR competitions back when he was playing. Truly Iron sharpens Iron.

This to me is looking like a much better situation on defense than last year. We have a lot of starters back and a ton of great experience. These guys will be better than last year simply because we have a new system that is much more in line with the talent we have. We need to pray, or do what ever to the football gods that Ossai doesn't get injured, of everyone on defense, he is the guy whose skill set cannot be duplicated. We have no one else that can fill his shoes. I love our depth at DT CB and S. We really don't have any depth at DE and our linebackers are very questionable right now.

I think we have enough talent to be a top 20 defense, but with injuries I could see us being a 60's level defense.

If all goes well I think we lose 4 guys from this defense as early entries in the NFL Draft. Ossai, Coburn, Sterns, and Jamison.

If you think Jamison bolts, then do you believe he will be one of the starting corners too? Or is it because his verstility as a return man as well?

Barring any unforseen circumstance I think Ossai is gone, Sterns is gone, and one of Cook/Green/Jamison...whichever rises above at the corner position. I can see Coburn leaving with 2 years left, but that would mean he had a MONSTER year. And if he has a monster year that means our D is pretty damn good. And that means we probably win 10/11 regular season games and play in the Big 12 title game. I'll take it.

I don’t think our D will let us down. Our offense has been the biggest inconsistency. We have lacked in creativity and explosiveness on offense But, if that improves, it should be a good year.

Any talk of some Juco or Grad Transfer linebacker possibilities? I’d feel much better with one or two additions to that group.

Fun little stat for everyone regarding our defense---

Total unit ranking--- mind you, Ohio st, Georgia, Clemson, Florida-- those were some of your top 10 defenses last year. The highest ranked Big 12 defense was-------- TCU at number 27---- following right behind them were Auburn and aggy at 28 and 29.

At 38 and 39 were OU and Baylor. At 44 and 45 were k state and Iowa State.

Way down the list at 74 is West Virginia. Ya--- those guys.

okie light at 82 is next.

15 spots down at 97---- OUR DEFENSE checks in.

There were two teams in the Big 12 that we were better than.

At 122 the mighty Jayhawks of Kansas and at 127, the 4th worst defense in America, Texas Tech rounds us out.

My dudes, we have the 3rd worst defense in the Big 12. If we can just manage to crack the top fifty (Jesus Christ it sounds terrible to say that) then we have a chance to win some games.

Many factors played into that. Our starters were pretty solid and had long stretches of very good play. However, we had one of the worst 4th quarter defenses in college football last year, if not the worst. That is mostly attributed to the lack of depth at all three levels. That is beginning to be fixed.

Another factor was injuries. I was on here saying don't use excuses because we have high profile guys waiting and injuries happen. At the same time, I think it exploited the fact that this D had no depth.

Another factor I think was the way we practiced D. Every player it seemed like was a kill shot type tackler. That led to injuries and LOTS of missed tackles. I didn't witness a single practice so I can't say for certain, but when it is every single guy -- it is either allowed to happen, or worse yet, reinforced in practice.

This year we will certainly find out if it was scheme, or if these dudes just can't play D. With the depth at DL and DB I'm holding out hope for the better.

Rod Babers on the Blitz Podcast mentioned that this tackling technique was taught by Orlando. Not only was it ineffective but it was almost certainly the cause of the multitude of DB injuries last year.

Chris Ash is a big proponent of rugby style tackling. This should lead to much more sure tackles and few injuries in practice and in games.

Well hell, there you go. I would imagine Babers has been to plenty of practices as an ex-Player. I was just a lowly ole HS coach for a while and I couldn't stand the kill shot approach to tackling. I like my players healthy, lol. I'm a roll tackle guy, I guess because I was a secondary coach. Won't lead to a bunch of turnovers, but it will get guys to the ground and limit YAC. Offenses get impatient and try something risky, that is when you create turnovers.

Just like everything else, not every guy is a kill shot type tackler and not every guy is a roll tackle guy. It is pretty obvious in tackling drills who is who. Embrace who they are and feed it! Bryant Westbrook/Quentin Jammer weren't roll tackle guys. Mike Huff wasn't a kill shot guy. I'd say they all did just fine.

I am still 100% convinced we were that bad because of scheme. Look at our tackling statistics last year. You won't find a defensive linemen among the top 10 tacklers on the team. It was like we were running 8 on 11 on defense. Then look at all the DBs who were among the top tacklers. When you have a situation like that it leads to another problem we had. DBs getting injured.

Our defensive rankings were justified, we sucked, but it wasn't because of lack of talent or us being young. We schemed our way into that horrible defense and our defensive coaches were too pig headed to change it. Let's see what things look like this year, with a scheme that better fits our personnel. .

Those Safety’s and DB’s have to get it in their head that the kill shot doesn’t keep you in games anymore. Just stop it and play tackle football! Plus you don’t get hurt as much cause your not leading with a shoulder.

Tommy Nobis was the best tackler I ever saw. He tackled straight up. He said if you duck your head you get juked. I never saw him miss a tackle although it is possible he might have at one time or another. It didn't hurt that he was the strongest guy on the field....whichever field he played on.

It's the same but different now. With the new rule changes, it's actually more difficult to tackle. I know that sounds crazy-- but it will be another 20 years or so before this new style of tackling fully takes hold. As it stands, there are coaches my age that still teach kids how to tackle with the same "approach" that would allow you to still take a guys head off or blow a guy up. Let's be honest, the crowd doesn't jump to their feet after you rugby tackle a guy coming over the middle on a quick slant. They jump to their feet when you plant his ass like a rose bush for coming over the middle.

I don't think it was all Orlando teaching the spearing, I think Herman praised his players for taking the kills shots as well. He has said multiple times that the greatest compliment he can get as a coach is that they are physical. The players also all want to land the big hit that gets shown over and over on LHN.

Like I said, it is either allowed to happen or reinforced in practice and film.

Not speaking for Herman here, but being physical and kill shot tackling are not one in the same.

Today's players are so big and fast, they are like guided missiles.

Think about this. Mean Joe Green played the game at 275 lbs. Randy White played the game at 255 lbs. Lawrence Taylor played the game at 230 lbs.

We have freshmen coming in bigger, stronger and faster than those guys, then look at what we have going into the NFL.

It's a wonder we don't have more guys getting seriously injured.

I hate the new rules as much as anyone, but damn, something has to give when you are dealing with guys this big and fast running into each other at full speed.

Pretty sure all three of those guys could play and play well in the NFL right now. Lawrence Taylor would still be a perennial pro bowler every season. Don't forget that LT ran a 4.53 40 at the combine.

Hopefully cdc tells herman to dial back the summer death camp, so that we can maintain a healthy roster.

I want to see that duechy spencer rattler get his bell rung.

This notion that athletes today are so much bigger, stronger and faster is quite a stretch. The only difference that is measurable is weight. But even that is marginal. Weight doesn't correlate to stronger necessarily. With that said, there are more people on earth and more kids are in sports so of course the natural evolution will increase. If I have time I will do the statistical data from the combine every 5 years and compare.

But here is a quick look at the sack artists from yester-year vs. that of today in their HT and WT.
