I hope 2020 leads to the end of the bowl system and to and an expanded playoffs. The reality is most of the bowl games were bought and/or created by ESPN so they would have live programming that drew a decent rating over the holidays. When you are talking about the “tradition” of the bowl games. Only a handful have any real tradition, and most of those are involved in the playoff on a rotating basis.
So the bowl games are nothing but a money grab coaches try to sell them as being valuable but a lot of the teams are playing without an OC, DC lf even a HC. I’ve even seen teams have GA’s as the OC or DC for the bowl game.
A real 8 or 16 team playoff would make more money for the universities and college football than the bowl system ever thought about. The NCAA basketball tournament is arguably the most popular sporting event in America. Why? There is something on the line. You advance your move on, you lose your done. We love that stuff in America. A college football tournament would generate billions of dollars and huge TV ratings. Yes the 1-16, 2-15 game would likely suck. They suck in the basketball tournament too, but no one cares. They’d rather watch that than watch tennesse and Missouri play in the whatever bowl.
