I am a big fan of Taylor Sheridan’s scripts in Sicario, Hell or High Water, and Wind River. In fact, those are probably three of my favorite movies of the 2000s. But he just about lost me with 1883. Don’t get me wrong, the settings and cinematography were fantastic. And for the most part I liked the characters and performances of Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw, and LaMonica Garrett, even though they often seemed to be weak re-treads of those from Lonesome Dove. And Isabel May was real nice to look at for ten episodes. But her character, and in particular, her over-the-top, wannabe frontier philosopher voiceover narration drove us crazy and just about ruined the whole series. I think it would’ve been twice as enjoyable without it.
