Alamo Bowl TX/CO thread

Good grief guys in the last 2 games we've scored 124 points and gained over 1200 yards. Geeesh be happy a little bit.

Among the takeaways we actually started Jed, or whatever his first name is, Bush. Even before the game got out of hand a lot of guys saw the playing field. In a way this game was like an audition for next year.

Cade Brewer has announced he's coming back next year. He played like he knows that someone is better than him. And I can't remember the last time that boy ran 25 yards after a catch.

Bijan Robinson is now the face of TX fb. I mean isn't it obvious? It's been a very long time since we had a difference maker at a skill position. He's already the best rb we had since Jamaal Charles. We may finally have another Heisman winner before he's through. He's that good. In his 3rd game Joel Klatt talked about how college ready he was and said it was rare that a freshman was that mature so quickly. I agree. We now have a player who can set it up for everyone else. And finally the talent is there on offense and at every position.

One thing I enjoyed about our defense. No Taquon Graham? No problem. Welcome to the 40 acres Alfred Collins.

So the season is over and we finished 7/3. People have said over and over that we were a few plays from 10/0 or 0/10. No we were a goal line fumble from finishing 8/2. OK was better than us and we played lousy. And yet it took 4 ot's for them to beat us. ISU came in well prepared and out coached us.

And have we really played down to the competition? Or has there been a lack of talent and depth? I'm beginning to think otherwise about playing down.

Finally I think it would be really cool if the son of a former sooner qb leads to victory on 10/9/21?
Casey performed well and I believe he exceeded most people's expectations (especially mine). I had ignorantly written him off and felt the starting role would be between Hudson Card and Ja'quinden Jackson next year. Jackson is gone and Card isn't physically ready after watching him tonight. Card appeared confident and didn't look nervous. He actually played well. He looked very skinny, but the depth chart shows him and Casey pretty even at 6'2/193 and 6'1/197 respectively. I have watched Casey play in scrimmages and a couple of minutes in actual games here and there. In all those times, it never appeared to me that he had the talent to lead a team to a conference championship. I am still not sold on him after one game, but, I feel we can all breathe a little easier in that we aren't relying on a redshirt freshman at the QB position next year. The pros for Casey: He gets a full spring and fall camp to work with the 1s and he has been in the system for 3 years and next year will be his 4th. It is all up to him now to take advantage and get it. I will be pulling very hard for his success.

I am not sure about anybody else's take on our QB situation, but I am interested in hearing what y'all think.

Your assessment is pretty spot on. We have all the pieces to be a 10+ win team but we still have the mensa.
Trying to figure out half of Hermans decisions is like trying to pick up a turd by the clean end.

I think next years record all depends on the type of QB play we get. The 2019 and 2020 classes were very good classes so they might be enough to pull us through our bad recruiting year this past year. In all honesty I love Sam but I wonder how much he held this offense back with his ability to throw the ball. I’m a little more optimistic about next year after seeing all the young guys last night. Granted it wasn’t a very good Colorado team but they did what they were supposed to do and put them away in the 2nd half.

After watching the Alamo Bowl, I can honestly say I'm not surprised to see Thompson perform the way he did. I went to the Spring game 2 years ago and I could tell he had the arm to make every throw in the book and the athletic ability to make plays with his feet. He reminded me of a very very poor man's Warren Moon.

Bijan is a whole lot of fun to watch, we need to continue to limit his carries and he will be a very very high first round pick. And yes, the comparisons to Ricky Williams are legit, however a better comparison might be to El Ced. It will be interesting to see his development.

I was pleasantly surprised how well the oline played. However, Texas just doesn't have enough depth there and needs to seriously up their recruiting if they are going to get to the next level.

Defensively, Texas is looking pretty good now, I really like how we ended the season. Without dipping into cool aid if we were to keep our defensive coaches we would see incredible improvement acroess the board.

Weak link is still Tom Herman, at this point I'd be okay with firing Tom and turning the team over to Chris Ash as intrum for a year and letting him keep all the other coaches except for Hand. Bring in a badass Oline coach like Mike Muncheck and see how we fare.

I'm not going to knock Thompson. He played well. But here's the rub-- right now he's a Japanese pitcher in his first start in the major leagues.

There's little to no film on him. You don't know his tendencies, predictions, reads-- nothing.

The more film you compile on someone the easier it is to know what they are going to do.

No doubt but his long ball looked helleva lot better than Sams. His speed is awesome. With that said yeah let’s see if 2021 is a better year at QB.

Yep, more film is definitely needed here...

While that is true the one true thing with a QB you can’t coach is arm talent. I seen a couple throws from his last night that I haven’t seen from Sam in 4 years. It was just refreshing to see our QB hit a 50 yard bomb in the air to the WR in stride. He made a couple throws outside the hashes that had some zip on them.

I discussed the Spring game from 2 years ago with the deserter otherwise know as Metcalf directly after it occurred. Thompson had superior talent then but no experience. Now, with a Spring and some time with the first team, I could see him starting next fall. He needs some experience which Tommy Boy has been reluctant to give.

I had the same observations. It was fun to watch. Casey = fast twitch. Sam = Tebow twitch. Both fun to watch just different styles.

The team played well last night. Good.

Colorado was not a good team. Period. They probably would have finished only above Kansas in the Big-XII.
So, we need to keep that in mind. They dropped a number of passes better teams would not have. Better teams would have tacked better and caught an interception or two that were up for grabs.

The way we performed against CU is likely not good enough to beat OU.

That said, it was a very good outing to prepare players for next year.

I still do not feel confident that Herman will take us to where we want to be.

Hell....If he wont give the ball to a guy making 20 yds a play why would we expect him to give snaps to a guy that might be damned good?
Never give it Bijan on 4th short. Bad things can happen like turn the ball over on downs against ISU. Better to hike the ball back in shot gun formation and let Ehlinger stall the drive. That keeps our fails at 4th an short consistent.

I agree 100% with Clob, however I also agree about Thompson's arm. His long ball was a thing of beauty. Also his ability to see the open man and get the ball to him was much much quicker than Sam's is.

Other have said this, but Sam was the first real QB Texas has had since Colt, and I've defended him in the past, however watching Thompson made me realize he had a lot of limitations that I just didn't see because of the crap we had before him.

Sam rarely ever threw receivers open. As a QB you have to have an internal clock and anticipate recievers being open before they actually are. This the one thing that Sam really struggled with. I even think he made our offensive line look bad at times with his indecisiveness. I don’t know how much of that is based on coaching or Sam. Probably a little bit of both I imagine.
