*** Every Tuesday during the offseason, we'll have this thread, updating the projected depth chart for the upcoming period or during the period in progress. It will alternate from offense to defense weekly, meaning that each side of the ball will be "updated" every two weeks. Since there are sure to be times when updates are not needed due to nothing having changed or no new info coming in, please think of this thread more as a place for depth chart discussion to live. In weeks where there are no updates, we can discuss changes we'd like to see, ideas we ponder when looking at the personnel and any other thoughts you may have. Of course, in some weeks there will be major changes based on events, circumstances, news and intel coming from out of the program. ***
A few fairly significant changes on the projected spring football depth chart on the defensive side of the football. At this time, the status of spring ball is in doubt, but we'll continue to do the updates for the spring football projection until/if any announcement about foregoing the spring period becomes official. When/if that time comes, we'll shift our focus in this column to full-on projections for the fall, including new summer enrollees.
Once seen as the two surefire young future star cornerbacks in the program, complete with national recruiting pedigree and dripping with potential thanks to rare physical tools, both cornerbacks Jalen Green and Anthony Cook (now juniors) have found themselves coming into spring football on the outside looking in under a new defensive staff.
One of the more intriguing nuggets Anwar was able to pick up in the last few weeks was the fact that it looks as if the new coaching staff is going to start out the spring with Chris Adimora ahead of Cook for the nickel corner slot and Josh Thompson ahead of Green at his outside corner slot. The fact that Cook was moved to nickel to begin with felt like an eyebrow-raiser, but in the end, you could reasonably chalk it up to the idea that maybe the staff wanted to find a way to get Green, Cook and Jamison (last year's main rotation of CBs) all on the field at the same time. Now that we see that 1) Green isn't even projected to begin spring as a starter and 2) neither is Cook as of now (having been temporarily usurped by a player one year younger), we basically learn most everything about that initial presumption was wrong.
The other big news was that Moro Ojomo would start out spring football in a competition with Marquez Bimage for the starting SDE role. I'll have an upcoming series where I'lll single out individual depth-chart position battles in-depth, but needless to say, this becomes one of the most interesting and important ones on the entire roster.
