The tech giant based in Cupertino, California, says the new campus in Austin will start with 5,000 employees and provide jobs covering engineering, research and development, operations, finance, sales and customer support. It will be less than a mile from existing Apple facilities.

Austin already is home to more than 6,000 Apple employees, representing the largest population of its workers outside of its headquarters.

“Apple has been a vital part of the Austin community for a quarter century, and we are thrilled that they are deepening their investment in our people and the city we love,” said Austin Mayor Steve Adler in the statement.

I wonder where the specific location will be if it’s less than a mile from their current complex. I’m guessing a portion of the Robinson Ranch?

I was thinking they would take over that complex where Freescale was but you may be right.

KXAN: Apple says the new campus will include 50 acres of preserved open space and its workspaces will be powered by 100 percent renewable energy.

I get the concerns over traffic - especially if you live near the proposed campus. But I don't see how you can't be excited about this overall. Engineering, research and development, operations, finance, sales and customer support...that's a lot of jobs that encompass a wide variety of skills. That kind of job diversity is nothing but a good thing. Oh, and the fact that Apple pays so well will only drive up salaries in those areas at other companies in Austin as well since they'll have to compete with Apple for new talent.

It good news. It's a great company bringing jobs to Austin. If you can't deal with traffic, you probably shouldn't live in a large city. I'm sure a lot of workers will work from home, at least part of the time.

My office is right across the street. This is great for Austin, but it will be a major PITA getting in and out of work each day. Guess more WFH is in my future.

I don't know exactly where, but I don't believe it's technically going to be in Austin? I thought I had heard just north of Austin.

This is the type of growth that’s more ideal for the city IMO. No crazy hoopla like w/ Amazon. Great company, jobs that will rise the boat for everyone in the area. But not an overwhelming influx of people/cars/housing needs/etc. It still allows for a competent city government (if that were to happen) to make reasonable attempts to accommodate the cities growth.

That’s pretty awesome.

I’ve seen no where in this thread or the other that says where the new campus will be. Can you tell us where you work so we can find out where it will be?

There is a lot of open space north of Parmer between Preston Oaks and the Freescale facility. McNeil/Parmer area. Currently facility is at Riata. Google map it and you can see all the open space.

What do austinites think of this? Im going to guess something along the lines of oh great just what we need more traffic and something about Californians moving in.
Exactly what I was thinking since its extremely close to me.
