On a dreary weekday night, the Longhorns (5-0) put together a complete performance defeating the Lamar Cardinals (2-2), 6-1.
The effort was kicked off by Kolby Kubichek in his first start of the season. He dealt three innings only allowing two hits and two walks (0 runs) in his time on the mound. In the meantime, Austin Todd was busy delivering a double with two outs and the bases loaded, giving the Longhorns a 3-0 lead in the third inning that was never returned. The bases clearing double, hit to the right-centerfield wall, was the play of the game for Texas. Owen Meaney followed up Kubichek on the mound with three perfect innings, a performance coach David Pierce called "outstanding" after the game. Texas freshman RHP Will Swope, who pitched .2 innings in the seventh was a bit nervous and gave up Lamar's only run of the game. Another Longhorn freshman RHP, Andre Duplantier II, was poised and confident as he worked through 1.1 innings. He was followed by Mason Bryant who sealed the Texas win in the ninth.
Only five hits for the Longhorns, but they found other ways to extend the lead (after Austin Todds knock off the wall that scored three), such as Brenden Dixon's bases loaded RBI walk and Murphy Stehly's sacrifice fly, both coming in the sixth inning.
Closing thoughts from coach Pierce on this hazy night, "We're 5-0. What I like about it is that we had to earn that 5-0. None of the three teams that we played really gave us the ballgame", he continued, "We're going to be tested. The game is going to be dictated different ways. Then we respond."
